Not a Commando but...

I just got the bike. When the last PO changed to a single carb setup he moved it to a new location. Not sure what was there to start. Here is where the key is now. Last PO passed away but I think his mechanic did the work. Will research it and see if I can help.

The rear brake cable should be routed over the Z plate and not under it.

If it is routed below as shown in your photos then it can cause the rear brake to lock when the suspension compresses fully.

I'm redoing the clutch on this bike. When I took the foot peg/ brake assembly off I noticed it looked like a bad routing setup. Thanks for the info on how it goes.

You fuel filter is on backwards.

thanks for the upclose photos. My bike has the same exact spot where the key hole is. I always look at it like it was cut by a PO and not something from factory. I plan on welding it closed if it isnt stock to begin with but seeing yours just like that makes me wonder if it came factory with the hole like that. Im just too young to know if it came that way factory or not heh.

Nice to see everyone help out with the other details too. So much stuff on my bike from PO was wrong and probably still is. I just try and fix whatever I can as I discover through research and helpful people with detailed knowledge....

Excuse the crappy blackberry pic :(

Lovely Non Commando single Nortons.

Side cover key tends to get knee'd off. What was Norton thinking? Any who can search for hole caps for automotive fire walls to home and bath fixtures to see what might adapt or fill in and repaint or put a cast metal horny toad over the hole like my buddy Wes did.

And the panniers Norti, where from and how much? They look the biz, how are they performing?

Hello Davamb,

Panniers are soft throw overs. Cost about $120.00 the pair. They are ridgid enough to maintain their shape. I added a bracket to eliminate the possibility of it touching the wheel.

Just did a 2000km trip (HBB Broadford). Hold enough to do a week away. Did a great job.

They tie down to rear pegs and do not move, even with enthusiastic riding.

About 200 klms of corners

Just curious if your license plate is the "real deal"??? I ended up with NQRTQN after a long search on my DMV's website....can't tell they're "Q's" until you're right up on the back of the bike.

Gooday cmessenk,

When I was about 17, I terrorised the neighbourhood on a 750 commando with racing megaphones running methanol. An old lady called my parents and complained about a naughty boy on a Norton. It has stuck ever since, hence the plate NORTI. We only get 5 digits in OZ.

Much thanks Nortiboy, I'll hunt down a set. (Mean to get to Broadford next year too.)

I did some searching on the net, it seems motodry is only available in NZ and in OZ, not here in North America.
Too bad, they look like great panniers.

I have the same bike but in black, built in 1975. Im ashamed to say that I put it away about 18 months ago (suspect Layshaft bearing), ordered &received the trans rebuild kit from RGM, but have done nothing with it since.

You have a lovely looking machine there.

Non camera phone pic.... I get my commando pipes from "commando specialties" supposedly on the 30th.... Its not a frame up restoration but I am gathering parts as best as I can. And of course lurking the site and learning all I can. Lots of knowledge here and I appreciate it!!!

and of course if anyone sees things routed wrong or anything please let me know!! I would rather sort it now than get it pointed out on the road! Does google have a hobot translator? (just in case)

I'm finding a lot of things done wrong on the bike. I didn't even notice the filter. Only rode the bike a couple miles before tearing it down. Front end is toast, clutch sticking. All new parts on the way.

Hi all, its been a while since my last posting. Been busy running in my new "toy" (Ducati Multstrada 1200 ST). Anyway, I thought that I'd post the final stage of my Commando setup. Not totally "concourse" but goes pretty well now - especially with JS flatsides. Cheers.

Finally, the light of day!

My '74 I've just completed sorting, no big dollar paint, no glamor bling parts. Fresh rebore, .020" over, trans rebuilt, swing arm tightened up, etc, etc,...
