Good luck young man! It looks like it's "all there", and not too rusty at all. You have some obvious issues, like the butchered head fins and exhaust port, but at least it's not a total rust bucket, where half the parts are not salvageable and have to go in the garbage.

Hopefully, what you see on the surface is the worst of your problems. You have to get a commando to a certain point of mechanical correctness to enjoy it. All that work is on the front end, getting it put together correctly. Then you learn to tune it, so it runs well and handles very well, and it pays you back double your effort.

I was in blighty last week and went out that way to Hyde Hall RHS gardens on Thursday. I was tempted to pop to Cold Norton, but ran out of time. Was the pub open?

Afternoon Sir.... Photo was taken about half hour before opening time, but the Manager came out for a chat about bikes in general (I gather he rode at one time) then progressed to Mazda MX5s so I made my excuses and left... Old age precludes me remembering if that was last Thursday or Friday.. So I might have just missed you if you hadn't already decided not to turn up :-)
 
The kid made some progress yesterday - removing the high-rider bars and the hillbilly exhaust with carriage bolt fasteners. I confirmed the head type code of RH4, but have a lead on a head stamped RH10, though it's also had some work to repair the threads in the exhaust ports. I was told the weld shows, and not suitable for restoration but fine to use as a runner. I'm waiting to talk with the kid and photos of the RH10 to determine if this will be alright with him.

I think if you have some welded in inserts you can have them machined flat so the welds don't show. Just an assumption.
 
Not sure why I took this photo , not sure if I put one on this thread before , on wall to right are photos of first attempt at cleaning bike up ,made it yellow in memory of childhood friend that died in accident on his yellow norton in spring ‘74 .... things have changed so much since that first go round , access Norton Forums are now a thing and we use digital cameras , not what those wall photos were made with ,

I think headlight ears are alloy EMGO , maybe I could find receipt .... but almost sure they are what I said above , thanks ..... if you look close on wall , there is silver IOM medallion that was sent in exchange for an old Boyer setup , to be used on Moto Moroni , most parts I have traded for T-shirts , this item will last the test of time , thanks Cliffa !

RT .... I just found the EMGO headlight ears on Amazon $33 plus $5 shipping .... in case you were interested , lots of other types that supposedly fit a Commando as well ....

Thanks Craig ! I may order them up - install next winter though - I haven’t the heart to tear down the forks at this time .
 
Yes it is a pain , I went through 2 sets of gaiters in 2 yrs before ordering AN version .... cursed the local seller each time as the gaiters were branded genuine ....
