I cant ride under 3k rpm without thinking somethings terminal. I heard a Ducati the other day and to be fair it was worse ticking over with a clattering noise.

Is it just cause things aren't under load ? free play in stuff ? or just the 1950's style ole push rody nature of the universe ?

Some say much of the clatter is caused by the backlash spring on the balancer shaft gear.
As the spring weakens, and allows more lash between the crank gear and clutch basket gear, more noise is generated.
Externally it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause due to the path that the harmonic takes through the engine and to your ear.
But if you can hear the clatter, then your silencers are too quiet.

I have a Ducati 999, and when the engine is cold the noise coming from the top end of the motor sounds like a thrashing machine.
Ducati now try to cover the top end with body work and such to absorb the noise.

The primary oil is shared with the gearbox. So it’s unlikely to have gotten that low (you’d have noticed it on the outside me thinks). Having said that, IF it is low then it’s serious as you don’t want an un oiled gearbox !

Very cool racing pics and impressive ground clearance! There’d be some serious scraping and clattering if you tried this with the standard exhaust.

If I had to be honest I probably would’nt venture to the track on my Norton. Visions of the worlds most beutiful motorcycle (hey we all have an opinion right) sliding down the tarmac, digging into the kitty litter, flipping twice, tank separating and the bike exploding in a ball of flames as it hits the tyre barrier preclude this! Ok, maybe I’m catastrophising a little, but I’m sure that my exuberance would try to overtake my skill level on some bend or other and it would all end in tears! Just trying to work out at what age my balls fell off!

Hey mate, Been through a lot with this bike before I even rode it, and its all set up now, those are all the old pics on the website, I think I'm to emotionally attached to sell it after seeing the video we made with my freind Jamie Robinson @motogeo thrashing the nuts of it around Malibu, I didnt think it would stay together but its passed the test with flying colours and got the badge of honor! What Sunday mornings were meant for, coast road to Whitby and moor road back. Around 60 miles of blissful 961 biking. Never missed a beat up hill and down dale .

Just had a nice Sunday morning ride along the Pacific Coast and back up through the canyons. Took this picture at the Point Mugu Naval Air Station missile park. I spent a lot of my life working there. I started as a student trainee in 1959 at the age of 17, just two weeks out of high school and married for less than a week. At that time it was called the Naval Air Missile Test Center. I worked there, with a couple of breaks for college, until I retired at the begining of 1996. The base went through some organizational changes over the years, and by the time I left it was called the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division. I came back as a contractor to the Tomahawk Cruise Missile project office, one of the projects I had worked on at the base, and stayed in touch with friends there until I finally retired for the last time in 2004. Back in the early '70s, I used to commute to work occasionally on my '71 Commando Production Racer. One of the other engineers at work had an early SOHC Honda 750, and we regularly used our lunch breaks to strafe the local coast roads. He talked me into trying road racing with him, the beginning of a lifelong addiction.

Great pictures Ken ! I spent some time in NAS Miramar while in the USN 1978 to 85 . One of only two USN Master Jet Bases , the other is Oceana VA . I think NAS Miramar is gone now ? Became residential development , the San Diego government couldn't wait to get their hands on that land ! I heard they are trying to push the USMC base out too.

You have got to use a image hosting website like photobucket or flickr . The other option is to sign up for VIP membership and be able to post directly. After hearing about VGY.ME from Speirmoor I find this is the easiest and best to use.
