Anti wet sump Idea

If half the energy that was spent thinking about, posting about and arguing about anti-wet sump devices was spent on starting bikes often, there wouldn't be a problem!

Just sayin'...

I would if it weren't for butt freezing winter and rainy days.

I had never heard of the term wet sumping either, before coming to this forum.

That said, way back in the sixties, before starting, I checked the oil level in my tank one day, found it a bit low, so added some oil to bring it up to normal level ....

I bought my bike new. Somewhere around 2500 miles, still in warrantee, it started running poorly.. no power, especially going uphill. I took it to my dealer, and they did a "tune up". The problem remained. Then I noticed oil dripping from the air filter. I had overfilled the tank and the filter was soaked with oil. Replaced the filter and all was well again. That was the last time anyone but me has worked on my Norton.

The rider's manual says to run the engine for 3 minutes before checking oil level. Wet sumping was known at the factory.

After my till between the legs ride, [ spotting for a Tutukaka Rally ] I had to use my 750. Its oil level was very low so thinking I had drained some out, I topped it up. When I got to the servo in Whangarei, I had oil from arshole to breakfast time. And my main stand broke. The bike was loaded up and I had to get a lady to hold the handle bars for me while I got off. [ I had thrown the side stand over my should in early 73 when the bike was 18 months old ]. What a ferking mess. I had to siphon some more oil out into an empty drink bottle I found in a rubbish bin.
Oh what fun, it is to ride on a COMMANDO

BTW, during that rebuild on the 850, I dressed the oil pump and got tighter clearances. That reduced the amount of oil draining into the engine, but I don't think that lasted more than a year or so.

great idea.
Ready to use: http://www.fumotousa.com/

Given that 1) Oil will pass through a gear-type oil pump, 2) my Commando is used intermittently because I have a few other bikes, the simplest solution for my needs is a quick and easy way of draining the excess oil from the sump.
These Fumoto drain valves look like they would do the job.

They are available in the UK too at https://www.quickvalve.co.uk/size_charts_motorcycles.htm

I need to work out which size could be used for a Commando (if any will fit..)

Royal Oilfield will often do this ( no offence to RE owners)
