Norton 961 Alloy Tank

Hey Jon, not sure. From memory it was some guy in Scotland advertising the sale of the bike - just took a screen shot without further detail - Doh! I do that a lot!

If you want LOUD!?

Hey Skiddy, this guy is in Brizzy and looks like a possible for any paintwork. Worth a look.

I installed the Zards 2 into 1 today sounds awesome. I’ve only started it and will go for a blast tomorrow. I’ve left the db killer in and it’s not that loud.
Have a great time, our roads still bladdered in salt.

From the label it looks like ZARD.
Think they are still going.
Followed the bread crumbs and apparently, it‘s a Harris exhaust out of the UK. I contacted them and it’s a one-off; not an exhaust they list. Very expensive to re-create. Pity, I really like the shape.

It will be a couple of months until I get my hands on the ally tank, so I thought I’d look at some prospective paint designs. At the very least the Norton logo will need to be painted onto the tank, although the decal will do until painting takes place. I am gravitating towards the Breitling design in reverse, or negative if you like. Don’t want to just bolt the ally tank and leaving it - although I might.

Polished ally tank, with the inside of the gold pinstripe exactly the same as the standard black tank. Ally painted tail unit with the inside of the gold pinstripe in the standard black. Not going to paint anything until I’ve seen it mounted in its naked state of course, and ridden for a while to check for leaks.

Any thoughts or comments from you discerning and artful lot? Not concerned about creating a one-off or residual value lost by modifying away from standard - I have no intention of selling.

Ideally I would have got my hands on that ever illusive single seat unit:rolleyes:! C’mon BN, get it back in business!

You should post some pics ! And let us know what it sounds like with the db killer out .

This is a little off the mark but thought I’d share it as it’s tank and Norton 961 history. Kinda.

C’mon you Norton nuts, I refuse to believe that no one has an opinion on a prospective colour scheme for the new ally tank. Is this because most believe that it should just be left as is, less logo and pinstripe? Does the reverse Breitling idea not work for you? If you think that it’s crap idea please feel free to say “Steve, that’s a really crap idea!”

Appreciate your feedback, noting that a few on the site have purchased this tank from TAB Classics.

Steve, that’s a really crap idea! I'm not even sure if I want pinstripes. Now how do I get an alloy airbox and seat hump. Ollie has an alloy swinging arm.

Do we know if we need to replace the fuel pump gasket/O-ring? when we swap over to the new tank.
Skiddy

Hey Skiddy,

Well I suppose I did ask for that, literally;)! But I do get it! The vast majority of vintage cafe racer silver tanks would have been left plain, with just the logo. I’m gonna mount the tank with just the black Norton decal from TAB affixed and see how she looks. Any paintwork can wait until later.

Hi Tony,

I take it that you intend to use the O-ring from the Alternate Parts List? Thanks.

I got mine from a UK source , it will be the same one though . There was a thread on it , very good price with shipping . I bought five of them.

Am looking at getting an adventure touring bike with a 30 liter tank (7.92 gallons) and ride out west
Not wishing to hijack the thread, but what yer looking at ?
2023 Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Explorer (supposed to hit US dealers in a couple of months)
2022 BMW R 1250 GS Adventure
202X Ducati Multistrada 1260 Enduro

All have 30 liter fuel tanks. Not sure if Ducati is bringing any more of the 1260 Enduro models into US, and the V4 gets really poor gas mileage and has a smaller fuel tank. Sure I could get a bike with a 20 liter tank and carry a RotoPax, but right now thinking about these three bikes with 30 liter tanks
So .... bought a '22 BMW R1250GS Adventure. Won't bore you with details or my impressions (which are quite positive), but here's a couple of pics. Time to tour!

As a long time KTM adventure bike fan, I would say that that represents a wise choice. The beemer is still the benchmark by which all other adventure bikes are measured, when it comes to long distance trouble free touring. You’ll need deep pockets to kit it out fully though - don’t sell a kidney, you’ll need both of them working well depending on where you intend to tour.

Congrats on the purchase Italia and remember, he who dies with the most toys wins!!

That looks nice, you won’t bore us and we DO want to hear your impressions !

I also had another look in my local BMW dealer recently but they just didn’t quite tempt me.

My Africa twin, great bikes though they are, just wasn’t floatin’ my boat.

Ended up with this instead, 2018 Multistrada 1260 ‘Pikes Peak’ (that’s now 2 Italians in my shed).

Here it is, from naked to fully dressed…
