New (to me) Dominator

Very neat. Nice one.

FWIW I have used 7”x5” plates for 37 years and never been collared for it. Just fit the barn door job for the MOT.
Yep, I think I’ll go with that. I’m claiming wheel clearance! The plate that was on the bike, while cool, shouted ‘pull me’.

small update, my ECU bracket turned out a disaster..there is so little room for bolts, I had to switch to 2mm steel plate instead. Easier to bend, made in one piece, so very happy.

This is as tight as I could make it to the ECU:

but you can see that bolt hole clearance is minimal

so if anyone else is contemplating tis sort of thing, 2mm plate is about as thick as you can go and it has to fit just right on the ECU.

Net step, clean and properly define the edges of the tail tidy to get it looking neat and tidy. Not that you will be able to see much of it when it's fitted! New indicators on their way as well!

Trial fit with indicators.

Not 100% happ[y, so some slight changes will me made:

Not keen on the parallel sides coming down from the rear light past the number plate light. I'll reshape a little to loosely folow the outline of the lights...but not too much. I don't want to remove much strength from the area.

I don't like the fact you can see the indicator securing nuts/wiring, so giving that some thought.

Otherwise, coming along nicely!

I think you’re being way too fussy!

Don’t forget that A) a coat of satin black will negate most of your points and B) no one will ever scrutinise it that close up !

You can get rubber boots that cover the nuts, Rizoma indicators come with them, I’m sure a search would find similar. IMHO that would be enough to neaten them up. Trying to hide them with more steel etc would seriously degrade the simplistic elegance of your current design IMHO.

Rizoma rubber ‘boots’:

Sold...looking for 'ahem' nut covers lol!

this is the problem when I make stuff..I get all fussy about it and other people will say 'wtf are you worrying about?', If I bought it, I'd probably be saying 'happy days' and just fit it!

Edit, never even knew they were a 'thing'

Bit more of an update

Both parts were etch primed, flatted back and top coated..the normal process.

More rust found in the headlamp bowl. Not serious, just surface, but had to be taken care off!

ECU bracket in place with some high density foam to keep things located

and fromy idicators wired up...bit of a rats nest in the headlamp bowl!

New connectors added to this little sub assumbly for the rear lights, which was handy, vs adding these 'on the bike' as it were:

You can also see one of the gaskets I made from neoprene for the two rear lights

Wiring up the tail tidy. I'm using a Techflex F6 cable wrap on the indicator cables,,,just neatens things up

These are the caps recommended by Fast Eddie...really good...plus the tool I used to stretch them over the connectors....one of those ex MOD ebay buys that has proved invaluable over the years.

Charging the battery...battery all connected, fuel pump connected, ECU connected...I can hear the pump running intermittently, no leaks, so we are go for a start up later today!

I saw your vid on FB, sounds sweet. Are those short pipes street legal (i.e. not stamped "Not for road use") ?

From a distance, they are completely street legal! Up close, if you look closely on the inside, it may well say 'not for road use'..;) Many here seem to get away with them, but when I took them off, there really isn't much silencing going on. Some perforated pipe and some sound deadening and that is it.

Sweet ! Almost done ?
Nearly. I’ve just made up a rear reflector holder to attach to the original standard size number plate. Just need to paint it black and attach. This will be my MOT plate...needed for our yearly MOT test here. Once passed, the smaller plate..which is legal...will go back on, sans reflector. Then it’s off to the MOT and I should be done and can get out and ride it! Mind you, cut the reflector holder out last night...outside, shaped and primed it outside...and then the heavens opened and it hasn't stopped.

Looks amazingly neat, like factory fit (hope that’s not an insult ?!).

I imagine the smaller plate will def be fine anyway, but with the barn door plate, are you sure the tyre will clear a max compression ?

Well, I'll take that as a compliment! It's such a same that in my view these bikes were let down on details, but it is what it is and I'm enjoying working on the bike. I kinda try and make these things look like they could have come from the...I mean a. :D ..factory. I've made bits for my car projects..like mounts etc and try and make them look like they were something from the factory. It's suprising what you can do with pretty basic tools and time. For me I probably spend more time that makes sense, but it keeps me off the streets!

Yes, a full size plate with reflector might cause issues. I spent a while looking at the number plate angle so I need to look at that closely.

I have options, just for the MOT:
Space the number plate up to give additional clearance
Fit smaller plate..which is legal..as in the video....and replace the number plate light with a reflector. You need a reflector for the MOT, but not a number plate light...on the road you need a number plate light, but not a reflector..technically anway!... so some swapping around needed. Idealy I'd like a plate for the MOT and simply swap over after, but a ride will be required for the MOT. Mind you, nothing stopping me swapping plates around the corner form the MOT place!

Mine had plates engraved 'not for road use' which were welded on but the welds weren't big so I simply ground them off prior to MoT. If the tester spots them he can issue a fail so worth covering them in tape... apparently they can only go on what they "see but can't touch"
