New (to me) Dominator

Mine had plates engraved 'not for road use' which were welded on but the welds weren't big so I simply ground them off prior to MoT. If the tester spots them he can issue a fail so worth covering them in tape... apparently they can only go on what they "see but can't touch"
Easier just to polish off the 'NOT';)

Well, the time had come. MOT time. Every thing looks good. Rode it to te end of the drive and back...about 75m...and tat was it. Booked for today, so my first proper ride of the Dominator...but only 10 miles each way, but some nice curves down to the sevenoaks bypass and on to Tonbridge and fast lane motorcycles.

ready for the off!
New (to me) Dominator

well, this was my first proper ride and yep, viby, the steering lock sucks in tight spaces...caught me out a little turning into fast lane....but wow, what a riot to ride! I really enjoyed it. So different from my other bikes! I can't wait to take it to some of my favorite roads in the area! Big smile and it's pretty much everything I expected!

Safely arrived..
New (to me) Dominator

but after a tense 30 mins...it was a big fat fail!:eek::oops::rolleyes::mad:

A really silly thing though. The front tyre was on the wrong way around!

Unfortunately, they were rammed, so it's booked in next week for the tyre to be swapped and a free retest! Advised to look at by throttle cable routing and chain ever slightly loose, so will attend to these.

and must do up the bolts tighter for my MOT plate!

New (to me) Dominator

so by no means a disaster, but slightly disappointing.

Glad you like it after all the hard work you've put in.

It could have been a lot worse. I took mine for inspection about 4 weeks ago, fully confident it would pass no problem. The tester pulled up after his test ride, beckoned me over and asked me to read what it says under the exhaust pipe. I said, sorry I don't have my glasses on, so he slowly said to me "NOT FOR ROAD USE" I nearly fell through the floor as I'd never seen it before. (they get the benefit of putting it up on a high ramp), so it failed obviously. Anyway to cut a long story short Gazz and I swapped silencers as he was after some opens and it passed a couple of weeks later - phew. Big thanks again Gazz !!

Yep, loved it. Just quite tall for me and the kick stand is a faff, but really like it. I think the front wheel could just be removed and reversed, but I'm going to let them do it and retest if it gets me the pass!

Yes, mine have that on the pipes, but you really have to know it's there. I'll take care of that so it's no longer there at some point! To me, they are not too loud and look oh so right!

Agreed, as we discussed before I think, by far the nicest pipes.

Do they have eccentric chain adjusters on the swinging arm? Sometimes you can rotate them and lose an inch off the ride height.

I put a bit of red shrink sleeve on my stand so I can see it easier.

No, plain Jane adjusters, so nuthin' fancy!

Those are some BIG plates !

Those are some BIG plates !
Tell me about it. That’s the standard size. I have a smaller plate that is legal, but I can’t stick a reflector on the bottom...a legal requirement for our mot. Many put smaller plates on...and I might...but the risk is a fine.

Small piece of aluminium, 2 licence plate bolts, sorted! Ref reflector.

That's what I figured. Why else would you have it so big ? What I wonder is how much stress will this put on the tail tidy ?

I actually made up a mount, just in case. Ended up not using it. This plate is strictly for the mot where a reflector is needed. The smaller plate would need the reflector mount added....but that pretty much brings me to the same size, top to bottom, of this plate...which is tight on tyre clearance anyway. I’ll use this plate for mot’s and then use my smaller plate for everything else and not use the reflector...gives me more tyre clearance!

It should be ok....it’s 3mm steel....but should it not be ok, TTmk2 would probably fix that....or mk3 :D

Right, update due. Took her for the MOT and the guys simply spun the front wheel around and I had a pass, days before the caffeine and machine meet. Before I could tax it, I still had to wait for the pass to show up on the DVLA web site, which took a day or so, so the day before Caffeine and machine I was finally able to buy tax and at least be road legal.

Next thing as a tank upgrade, thanks to MXMartin. What a great guy...we chatted for hrs in his barn while birds flew in and out. He lives in a lovely part of the world with views across fields.

New (to me) Dominator

Plus added my slightly smaller...but legal plate. I make get a smaller one though...

One difference I did note was that the plastic tank touched the seat unit...both tank and tail unit looked like they had been relived of material to give some sort of clearance...but with the alloy tank, there is a significant gap.
New (to me) Dominator

but overall, very pleased!

One final touch, I put some 3M venturguard on te tank...simply cut out a suitable shape...just to protect the tank from scratches etc...so quite low key

New (to me) Dominator

So for now, that's me done..I'll update the 2021 meet up thread with a few pictures from the caffeine and machine meet:

I have a dominator Naked with the alloy tank and it also came with a painted tank. On my Domi the tank and carbon nearly touch. As you said, I also put clear paint protection film between them both. I also used a piece of adhesive foam between them.
I can get the gap slight closed up by adjusting the battery box tray and also by moving the carbon seat slightly.

Where did you score your seat pad? Loving the stitching.

On my commando sf I also have a alloy tank and it fits perfect with about 2mm of gap.

Ah, ok, good point, I'll have a look at the battery tray and see if I can move it slightly. I don't remember if there was much scope for moving it, but will look more closely now for sure.

The seat pad came with the bike..along with new foam seat pads should I want to go back to standard. The previous owner had contacts at the Aston Martin trim shop and got them to make the pad up. He was talking about giving the pattern to whoever bought the bike...but then, for reasons unknown, changed his mind. Shame, as I would have given copies to anyone who would have wanted them.

Well, it's been a while, but an update. We have megaphones. I lucky find on Ebay. No mounting bits, just the pipes:

pretty sure they have never been run

So first job, baffles. I took these to Zero exhausts, here in Kent. They made up thee baffles, which extend down the length of the cone, with wadding around them, then tacked in place.

so off with the short opens...this nut and bolt were MIA!
New (to me) Dominator

Before starting, I placed my phone with a sound level app and recorded the short opens at a specially calibrated distance using my handy table leg gauges! Just to give me some consistency. I'm not sure how accurate the phone app is, but it should give me a comparison between these and the megaphones.

Looking good, but as I'm not using the race bars due to lack of availability, I'm having to use the standard A frames, necessitating custom mounts

Both on..god knows how I'm going to get to the kick stand though!

...and these are kinda what I ended up with, and yep, they are different lengths due to the different mounting positions on the magaphones for some reason. Not quite sure why.

Now to order 3mm stainless still sheet to make these!
