Yeah, Champion caps with blue wires and regular black boots at the coils. The blue wire is practically unobtainable, so you'll only see one or two with the correct wire.

An NOS Lucas PU25A went on sale on ebay a couple years ago, went for almost $600

Thanks Bill, Would that be a blue stripe on a black wire? That is what my research shows. solid light blue tracer on black spark wire, probably some special Lucas wire. Used on other motorcycle brands maybe?
Or is it black tracer on a light blue spark wire?

I believe its a solid blue wire.

Here's a pic of one of Leo's bikes:

The P11 thread

Leo Goff has been involved with P11s since they were new, and is one of the experts on the model. He also prefers the Bakelite 'Champion' plug cap, complete with white bowtie logo.

Thanks Bill, Great looking Ranger, Leo did a nice job.
I am not sure about the solid blue spark wires and bow ties, but just having started my research on P11 I have a lot to learn.

Any pictures of that $600 Lucas nos PUZ5A that sold on Ebay?

Here is the whole 1967 ad for the Lucas products - how about period flashers hanging on a P11 license plate - yikes!

Numerous attempts in oil tank - no luck yet. Easy without fittings, soon as fittings added cant get front to slide up. Lost some paint on side of top mount which is frustrating......seems to be close to right way but.....

Agree that up and in is the wayto go - anymore hints available?

It really is trial and error. I put masking tape on the tank and frame to reduce any scuffs or chipping the paint. I also put the brackets on loosely and jiggled them into position whilst inserting the tank from the rear of the frame. Keep at it.
Regards, Paul.

Overseas shipping

Does anyone have a reliable shipper to the UK? I've got my '68' P-11A on ebay and a bidder is asking about international shipping. I'd appreciate any info on this subject.
Thanks
Randy

Got it, trial and error and a bit of leverage - no new scrapes or dings. As long as it never has to come out again!

Knut,
... I am still looking for a good used tach drive... Smiths BG1608/05

That same drive is used on BSA Gold Stars and Super Rockets. If you know a BSA guy, he can probably hook you up.

I've got a couple drives that are missing the driven gear. Seems if they stick, that vertical pops the cover off the bottom of the drive and ends up on the road somewhere. I bought one for parts from a BSA guy that had been safety-wired just for that.quote]

BillT,
I got some luck and purchased a good used 1:1 Smith gearbox for the Tach.
50 bucks! Not bad. Looks like some silicon around the plates. I will take this off and use a little JB Weld to keep thing in place so as not to loose any vital bits. Hobot would be pleased.

Good deal, Thomas!

I still have a 2:1 on my Ranger, so the tach never sees more than 3000 RPM. I've got a 1:1, but haven't gotten around to swapping it out.

Is this the type construction used for the original P11 battery strap.....rubber strip, folded and stapled with reinforcement piece at the staple tails?

Is there a picture available of an original P11 rubber battery strap ? maybe a magazine road test outside the usual 1967 USA/UK publications?

I have read many times about the oil seal plate being shown wrong direction on Speedometer drive side.
Here is the only useful photo I have found on the subject.
This photo shows a normal config on the left side, while the right side uses the seal plate as a spacer.
picture worth a thousand posts.

Here is the owners manual config showing the wrong way for #5

Looks like British Wiring dot com produces a nice harness for P11. Any one purchased this and used it successfully ? any notes you can pass on?

I used that harness for my P11 and G15. Since my P11 is a Ranger, I had to add the wires for the front brake switch.

I had ordered the harness they have listed for the G15/N15, but is was a magneto setup. Having my Ranger right there in the same garage, I could see the MC-30 harness would work. The various connections are all within inches between both bikes. British Wiring was kind enough to exchange the harnesses, no charge. Harness worked like a champ. This harness is also listed for the Mercury, which means it will also work for late Atlases with coil ignition. of course, if you use it on a Ranger or Mercury, you'll need to add the front brake wires.

Regarding the oil tanks, they had 4 different tanks during the P11 run, including the original version which did not have a drain plug. If you think it's tough fitting an alloy tank in that frame, try a steel tank with the hanger bars!

The look of the P11A and Ranger was the inspiration for the Commando Roadster, with the triangular side covers to mimic the oil tank and the reverse cone upswept mufflers
