Hmm, yes unfortunately the time was not right. Ducati had problems selling the 750SS, so much so that it was possible to find one sitting in a showroom three years later. Considering that they only built 401 (or 200, depending on who you talk to!!), that's significant. Mind you, they were also rather more expensive - something like $1200 for a Honda 750, $1350 for a Ducati 750 GT (the cooking model), $1800 odd for the 750 Sport and $3000 for the Desmo SS.
The 750 Sport is a better match for a RN Triple, but they only made 1500 odd of these, and they were not all snapped up quickly either. As a contemporary test in Cycle noted, the owner had to stand and take the endless cracks about Italian paint (poor), electrics (not much better), chrome (not much of that on the Sport fortunately), while having to constantly fend off pleas for a ride from those few who knew the truth.....
