My '74 does the kickstart down thing whenever I take off with authority (most always). 22t sprocket, 230 lb rider.
Roller bearing installed, trans is all fresh, twice.
A product of torque, on a bush. No way past it, with these operating parameters.

Over 18K miles on the the roller and other components installed at the same time, no issues as yet. I don't shim either, unless you can work out the tolerance build up along the layshaft then any shimming is guesswork.
Yes, Roller 4 me . Never an issue .

I have been using the roller layshaft bearing since 1977, i.e. since the ball bearing collapsed on my then new 850Mk3. Never had issue with it.

My current road bike has done about 25k miles on the gearbox rebuilt with it, our Commando "family racer" has had it since it was built up about 25 seasons ago, in fact all Commandos I owned in the last 45 years had it. Never bothered to shim, and never had one fail or the kickstart going downward.

Which is why I specified the 06.7710 roller bearing in our webshop, and why we made it part of the gearbox rebuild kit.

All 4 of my former Nortys received the roller replacement. My new MK111 project has a roller layshaft and a roller mainshaft bearing fitted into the left drive side of the gearbox shell.
