Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

Well then Matt, you maybe need to put some more actual nouns and verbs and adjectives in your sentences. !?!
Otherwise it just comes out as leading folks up the garden path.

Meanwhile, we are wondering why you are showing flatrack Atlas's or P11's, when this thread is about a roadgoing Commando resto. ???
We are not mind-readers ?

Can't wait to see what sort of comments that gets....

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

He's using the right hemisphere of his brain and you tend to use the left side more Rohan. So it's like speaking two different languages.?

I really like that flat track Atlas though, could be a more unique take on your average C'do as Matt says. Whatever he does just make sure it's black and gold, lol.

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

Do you think its helpful if he explores the 'right side of his brain' with Atlas or P11 Flattrackers,
while the OP is enquiring about restoring a pile o bits into a Commando ?

And just a few threads down is one on alternative frames, after all...

Must be fearfully bored , if thats the case ?? :D

Wots a Well Balanced Australian ?

He's got a chip on both shoulders .

And I thought you were all telepathic ! Right , as it were a intresting machine Ive not seen here or elsewhere before ,
and the general concept let alone machine might be of intrest , Whilst I was endevouring to find a stunning picture of
a aftermarket alloy front guard , I tripped over that . As it may have diissapeared in the annals of time ,
thought it worth throwing on as it may be of intrest to the young man .

This one might not be to everyones taste . ( polite for ' thats not bad ' but . . . WAs that NECESSARY ! )

this one apparently was the reason they invented Panniers .

Engineering , alloy rims :) & brakes'd be a good priority , with bolt on stuff as you find it . though jap bits are a bit off :P
actually , if yr short a front end , these days most of that sort of thing , might be worth considering . If its not an arm & leg .

Some young whippersnapper cleaned up in the classic raceing in the wet , on his Dustalish thing . Alloy home made engine plates Honda NSR ? 250
suspension , & the Dunstall exhaust modified to upswept raer pipes with cans , just like the ' all the rage ' at the time superbikes .It was black ,
roadser tank .

Fairly impressive listing to his rideing , whilst everone else had the throttle on half as long about the corners , at Pukekohe . So its a bit like the Irish .
Here Ten blokes will useually have at least eleven opinions . Engineering is , however , a matter of facts . There theres less ' varietys of outlook ' . :|

. The ancient alloy guards are still available

If you'd ever actually had anything to do with Commandos Matt, you'd know that the 850 guards are stainless steel.
But likewise available again through Norton suppliers - Andover Norton in particular.

Did you know Stainless Steel is an alloy? In fact, each grade is a DIFFERENT alloy.

Hi everyone, I didn't see a thread for introductions so I thought I would just post up what I have.

Welcome to the forum, Russ.

For $800, you did quite well.

Many of us have stacks of spares we can contribute; if you aren't afraid of properly sealing and prepping a fibreglass tank, I have a useable one (no leaks at present).

Your "before" picture will be an excellent contrast to the "after" photo, regardless of which path you choose.

Here are some more mockup ideas...

Great thing about a Commando, like Bonnevilles, they can be anything you want them to be with a simple change of seat, tank, bars & pipes!

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

Actually, i think you can use the 750 barrels and head on 850 cases. The through bolt allens would need to be replaced with studs (I don't know if the threads are the same, but maybe replaced with helicoils) and possibbly make sure oil feeds line up. A lot of racers use 850 cases 'cause they are stronger than 750 cases. I know of a couple guys that even run 850 MKIII cases on 750s as they are the strongest. I've never done it personally, but I'm sure the info is out there. That way you can have your 750.

Awesome! I could really use a tank. Just PM me what you want for it and we can go from there. Thanks!

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

i'd like to get a pair of crank cheeks, 2 rods & pistons and a useable 750 cylinder.
Some items are not any Commando I"ve seen.

Cutting off the rear loop greatly lowers the every day usefullness of a Commando as well as a mess in wetness but definitely a few lbs sexier in nice conditions.

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

Russhud , need more pics . ,easier to open ?

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

Working on it, Photobucket is being a PITA. The pics are hard to open?

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

There is a bit of random stuff, looks like I have a Triumph clutch and an unknown far out front end.

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

I see an old steel head oil line, an early timing case with the tach drive off the timing case, SS bars? I had Leo Geoff tell me the heads were worth about $2500, but that was for insurance. If those barrels are workable, and the gearbox cases, I'd say he has a good start, but it's still going to be picking through the parts and making sure they are good. You might as well can the bearings. I still say he can sell the parts he doesn't need and pay for his restore.

You got a good deal if the parts are serviceable.

The frame appears whole and is probably a later frame.

If you don't have a title, they are available from other states, I don't know how CA is on that issue.

I'd suggest you get a local fellow Nortoneer go over it with you.

This will be interesting if you can keep the interest up. It's going to be a long haul, especially if you still have to work for a living, unless you can afford to farm a lot of it out.

Nuts and bolts will kill you too. Make sure you get the proper ones.

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

If ya don't already have one, the next thing you'll need is a kegerator for that garage. Your gonna need it!

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

OH yeah set aside the Automatic wearing out advance units for me to make a deal on. I want a springer fork on my next build otherwise the long johns there sure appeal. If ya end up with a good bit of non Norton or unsold other brand parts there's some big vendors left that collect piles of these things.

Re: New here, just bought a nice pile of Commando parts!

Some of those engine and clutch parts look Atlas or earlier.
And a couple of HD brake rotors in the mix there too ?

Good Luck. If you get it all into one bike, it could be interesting ?!!

I would like to find a local Nortoneer, that would be really helpful. Frame is marked 2/75, I'm getting the frame and cases titled before I do anything. I received a large box of brand new bearings as well. No worries about keeping my interest, I'm very much a do it yourselfer and a motorcycle (especially old motorcycle) obsessive. Plus I've wanted a commando for almost 20 years. I'll keep putting pics up, hopefully you guys can help me tell what's what.
Thanks!
