No one I know knows what "pinking" Is ??? I am sure you mean "pinging". It is the rattling sound or BB's on a tin roof sound that engines make with bad gas or bad tuning !

I think I remember reading a post that UK pinking is the same as US pinging. Could be wrong, but I think that is what I read

For me the throttle seems to be touchiest when the bike is cold. Seems once the bike warms up then the throttle gets smoother and the engine-braking is less intense. Either that or I just get used to it as I ride and it doesn't bother me after the first few minutes of riding.

That's correct, pinking in UK is the same as pinging in USA, running lean and sounding like theres a coin loose inside the rocker cover....

I talked to my dealer this morning and he did just receive the Norton software and map. I don't know if its "077" but they only have one. I can't believe they don't have one for catted and one for de-catted ! :shock: He hasn't re-mapped any Nortons yet but he says the other brands he carries usually enrichen the start and idle settings primarily since this is where the EPA makes them go excessively lean ! My bike runs great except for sometimes taking 2 or 3 cranks to start and sometimes doesn't idle for the first 15 seconds so I'm not in a rush. If the dealer was closer I would probably go for it sooner.

I had my Sport re mapped after it melted the back off a piston,whilst it was back at the factory being rebuilt for the second time.The first time the starter motor gear fell off and did a huge amount of damage,locked the back wheel up !!!!
Completely standard bike,only had a first service at the factory.

My Sport, was pinking or pinging so bad it melted the back off the piston in only 220 miles,I had mentioned it to the service department who said it would be fine to continue.This is a standard bike,it happened this summer not as hot here as it is in US or Australia,I wonder if there will be a recall from the Norton Factory.People need to know what maps are in the bikes they are riding around on,if not how much more damage will happen.

You give no info on where you are or what year, I have never heard of this problem in the UK or US!

As my bike went back to the factory,for new pistons head and cylinder and had its first service there,I think it fair to say I am UK based. 961 arrived May this year. Dozer has even posted that his bike was pinking or pinging or do you not read any other postings ?

Lol, when I reported the pinging to Norton, via Krazy Horse, they said 'don't ride it so it pings, we are sending out a remap!'

It only happened in certain conditions, at 5500 revs in top then opening the throttle hard against the stop. If I increased power slightly less aggressively then it was fine, it was purely the hooligan end of the scale when it pinged.

I have read about the remaps improving starting, idling, etc. and wish I could get the same done for my bike. Being in California, that could be a problem due to the infamous CARB (Kalifornia Air Resources Board). The idle on my 2013 SE is intermittent, some times it is great, and other times it either dies trying to idle at 800 rpm, or idles at 1600 rpm. This is not entirely a function of mixture (fuel map), but also the algorithm the ECU uses to adjust the idle, which is a function of the ECU software, independent of the map.
Although this thread is related to fuel maps, I wonder if there are different versions of software, which could be equally important.

Does anyone know about SW version numbers, and which is the latest?
Does anyone know the manufacturer and model of the ECU Norton uses? Perhaps we could get cables and software direct from the ECU vendor, and trade SW and maps with our more fortunate brothers in England.

Just a thought.

doubt there is a different program for Kalifornia. you should call GP cycles or SBNT and ask. willing to bet the software is the same everywhere in NA....

Our ecu is made by Orex who will not discuss details with customers or dealers as far as I know. All Euro 3 (New) bikes in the UK, US, and Canada are using remaps 075,076,077 depending on exhaust configuration. I thought California bikes were the exception but there is a thread right here on this forum that states Euro 3 is CARB compliant. When I adjusted my idle up it seems the ecu knocked it back down and it now idles well, I had some of your symptoms before that. Mileage also helps, 85 degree + temps used to bring on these symptoms intermittently.

Since nobody seems to know much about the remaps in the U.S., can you or anybody elaborate on which maps above are used for which exhaust configurations?

I'm guessing that one is for stock exhaust, one for open slip-ons with stock catalytic X-pipe and one for open slip-ons with decatted X-pipe, but which ones...

According to Norton 077 is for long noisy pipes, 076 is for short noisy pipes and there is one for stock, they Don't mention cats at all???

Okay, that makes sense as the decatted X-pipe is not available through Norton, but after-market through South Bay Triumph/Norton in SoCal.

I looked into this (worried) as I just received 077 map.

077 is for loud pipes long and short. There is another program for Short Decat pipes like the DOMIRACER has (track use only) and one for stock exhaust.

PS - The re-map sure made a world of difference.

Why worry when it sounds like your bike is running great? I too questioned why your dealer used 077 instead of 076 since you have the short pipe but I figured that they just used the "richest" map. Thanks for clearing this up!
