Wow. Where do I start?

Thanks V7, for the encouraging words. Mine is part of that first delivery too. I saw a silver one in Dallas for sale on ebay some months back. I didn't pay all that much. Only a grand more then what they quoted originally. My dealership here on the East Coast kept three of the first 10. My starter hits pretty hard on the first cold start, still leaking oil, not much, after miles maybe a 1/2 oz., runs a little rough till she warms up. I will NOT give it up for another summer. 2 years without the bike of my dreams? I'm using it and having fun so far. They had the bike for over 4 months waiting for a gearbox. I've addressed every other issue. They should have fixed them then. I take it you have a Guzzi? They look like fun.

My experioence too, is that Norton eventually come through with the replacement part when something fails.
I just wish they were a bit quicker. My CR is in the dealer now over 7 weeks waiting on a new starter.
The starter never gave me a problem until I tried to wake the bike up after it's Winter nap.

The experience of owning the bike so far has been like being a Microsoft software beta tester.
Use the new app, encounter a bug, report it, wait for a bug fix, repeat the cycle.

When it's running, it's a blast to ride, and you soon forget about the problems.
Or maybe I just have short attention span disorder.

I'm sorry you're having starter/dealer issues, BT. It seems like whenever someone posts an issue around here, we just wait for it to happen to ours. Overall, the Norton experience is disappointing, yet, like you said, with short memory, its a blast. So what went wrong with the starter?

Britfan, Gold Coast did not "keep three of the first 10" 3 of the first ten were allotted to Gold Coast, the others went to other dealers. 10 came in the first container on the ship, Gold Coast never had them to keep!

Yes, I have a Guzzi. The good thing about Moto Guzzi is that it is a proven design that has been very reliable. So I use it as my standby.

That Thruxton you have should make a good standby bike as well . I put higher bars on mine and the only thing I haven't resolved is the seat. It must be the curve or crown of the seat. It just hurts after some time in the saddle. The Norton seat I like . It must be that flat wide area , it fits me and I can go a long way on it. I've done nearly 200 miles in an afternoon and no pain. I also like the sound , its different. Is it Ducati V twin like as I've heard others write about.? .

If you consider the handlng, the performance and the sound....
The 961 is a great Ducati Monster impersonator.

Hello BritTwit , I see you have a Ducati so you would know. I really like the look of the air cooled Monsters , the new water cooled not so much. Im sure the power is great though . The air cooled motors look great to me. Its just like the new triumph street triple , great bike , good power and handling ,. The look is not to my liking though , the engine has no beauty to my eye , its better to cover it up and make a small sport tourer out of it. Also the seat on that would kill me....

It's true.
The current Ducks have too much crap wrapped around the motor, and the gas tank is just a blob of hammered metal. Not very classically attractive.
The old bevelhead Ducatis motors were much more attractive, and had cooling fins, classic circular case features, like the Norton.
The 961 design is right on target for what it is meant to be.
Now they just need a bit of engineering refinement.

Didn't mean to say they distributed the remaining 7 to other dealerships. Guess I phrased it wrong. Let me rephrase, "Gold Coast received 3 bikes from the first delivery of 10." They did however, sell a couple of their later bikes to other dealerships. Hence the middleman and the higher price tag.

I've never ridden any of the air cooled Monsters, just an 848 superbike and a 1000 of the same. I have however ridden a new Monster 1200S. I must admit, although I told my buddy I wouldn't beat on it, i lied. That bike had ESP. It knew exactly what i wanted to do in the twisties, entering turns, so much more than the Norton. However, it did feel a little light coming out of the turns until I figured out why. That bike is so powerful, the front was coming up on me. The Norton felt much more sure footed on the trailing end of a curve. Either way, I love the handling of the Norton. I don't really need 145 HP either.

Fred, although I agree the Norton has many similarities with the Duc Monster which is a great bike in it's own way, I believe the Norton being a retro stands completely on its own!

Britfan, That is all true, at least to my understanding! But I still stand by my statement that there is more mis-information about these bikes then anyting I have seen in my almost 40 years of riding!
