Right. I have no idea why someone would do that rather than using a thread insert. I would either replace that cover with a nice used one or although expensive: https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-details-2/16717/timing-cover-750-850-mk3-c-w-all-fittings which includes a safe anti-wet sump valve.I’m assuming there shouldn’t be 4 holes where the timing plate mounts. Correct? Looks like they drilled and taped holes right next to the original
Is that just a later style cover? Isn’t available at Andover but I found one on eBay.Right. I have no idea why someone would do that rather than using a thread insert. that ebay is the one, as used on the Mk3 version of Commando. It has the extra inspection cap so that timing chain tension can be checked without taking cover off/disturbing ignition timing. It also has different internal components to help with wet sumping as Greg has said, though these should be checked as it is not new.Is that just a later style cover? Looks to be in okay condition.www.ebay.com
Yes, it is actually a MKIII cover. The one on eBay has the added value of a pressure relief valve which you may or may not need. That seller is pretty good about accepting offers and since the new one is nearly $400 delivered, his current price is not bad. The new one comes with the various seals, but you'll need a complete gasket set and the ones from AN include all gaskets and seals so that's not a big deal.Is that just a later style cover? Yep, forgot the oil pump bush: 06.6191.it will also need the Mk3 oil pump feed bush 06.7649 and associated rubber washer / oil seal 06.6190
edit; oil pump feed bush part no.
would it make more sense to also get a later style engine cradle rather than widening the center stand holes on the early cradle?
Got it. I just re-read your earlier post.Your original 1970 centre stand mounts onto the frame so there shouldn't be any stand holes in the cradle if it's the 1970 type.

Thanks. And I would be going with this type cetner stand?

I don't know where to find it right now, but you'll need a drawing with dimensions of where to drill the holes. There is little room for error with the placement of those holes. You'll also need to know where to drill the oil filter housing holes - again not a lot of room for error.Thanks. And I would be going with this type cetner stand?
