I'm thinking the "about 1 in" clearance you had between the ground and rear tire before changing the front disappeared simply because of more tread on the same brand and size of the new front tire. That 1" is not a lot to begin with.
For what it's worth, I purposely changed my rear shocks to longer units simply for ground clearance when cornering. The added benefits are sharper turn-in, and making it sooo much easier to get up on the center stand. Also, because both tires are now on the ground I think better support for the isolastics is achieved. I like to think they are, to a degree, unloaded during the off season. The down side is the bike is very slightly less stable on the center stand if the ground is very un-even and a thin board has to be used if I want it "up" enough to spin the rear tire.
