Are you sure carbon black is all that hard?
Is it used as an abrasive?
Check this hardness table out: https://www.tedpella.com/company_html/hardness.htm

I've been using these on my Triumph that has a Norton filter setup;Every NAPA store in the US has access to the (rebranded Wix) filters to fit the Commando.
dynodave has done a lot of work years ago to make it simple.
Strange table appears to say “carbon,” in an unspecified form, has the same hardness as diamond.
Sludge and black colour in engine oil is, to a great extent, lamp black, also called carbon black. It’s not graphite, but it sure as Hell isn’t diamond!Element Symbol Form Hardness
6 C carbon (graphite) 0.5
6 C carbon (diamond) 10.0
