Oil filter choice

Local sales tax is not collected when sent anywhere out of the sending state unless the business sending has a presence in the receiving state and the state, and the receiving state has sales tax.

If anyone in the US tries to charge you state sales tax, you need to question it! There is NO US sales tax - only state sales tax.

For instance, I have a presence in Virginia so only when shipping to Virginia or when someone comes to me in Virginia do I collect sales tax and give it to the county who distributes it.

Amazon has a presence everywhere, so they collect for every state that has sales tax - they do not collect for the state they are in - they collect for the receiving state which is a royal PITA from an IT standpoint. eBay got special (nonsensical) treatment from congress a few years ago and they are now considered the seller with presence everywhere so they must collect when sending to states that have sales tax.

Not all states have sales tax, and the rate varies widely. In fact, in some states the rates vary by county and even city in some cases.

Basically, the states, to a point, are sovereign and one state cannot tax another.
Thanks. That's helpful to know.

Regards

John

You can use couriers of your choice, you can even use you own courier to collect from AN which some do that have contracts with global couriers. Shipping prices above seem expensive to those on that side of the Atlantic, but if you want to see expensive you should see what it costs to ship to the UK.

I use the HIFLO HF153 RC. Probably bought it on Amazon. Usually get two or three at a time and just put on the last one off the shelf, so I don’t remember where I purchased.

Though no VAT is charged on non UK sales, the shipping is very high as AN uses DHL, at least into Canada. The courier then adds their own "Brokerage" charge after the package is on the way...basically holding it hostage until you cough up the added fee.

I use HiFlo HF153 filters on my Commando, available locally less then $9.

Do NOT be tempted to use the K&N "Wrench Off" filter with the hex nut tack welded to casing. Many reports of these failing at those tack weld points over the years. A guy on the TRat forum had a seized engine bc of this failure....could have been a bad accident as well from oil all over rear wheel. Eventually KN paid for a new engine, and product was recalled nationwide. Since reappearing, further failures are still being reported. Steer clear!
I have used K&N 153 oil filters on Ducati's for years and years and have had absolutely zero issues with them, I also use them on my Norton and have never heard of the aforementioned many reports?

Yup , Hi-Flo -153 for the 3 Ducati I have owned as well , I used this filter on my now sold ‘72 Combat for 20+ yrs with no issue ….

And I doubt that anyone here has done the testing or is equipped to do the testing of oil filters on a Norton to say which is "best". In fact, what is the definition of "best"? Some things come to mind, I"m sure there are MANY more: Flow when new, flow when old, particulate allowed to pass when new, particulate allowed to pass when old. And all that with an engine in good shape and well maintained, or an engine on its last legs and not well maintained.

To me, if it is the right size and type, it's probably fine. I use the ones from AN and it's not worth my time to find them locally for a little less, especially since I trust that those from AN are the correct type and I don't know about others.

Just search for K&N oil filter failure on the google machine, youll find loads of reports and some videos. One caught in act of failing on a track run, bike sliding off into gravel as rear tire covered in oil. Many fails no doubt from using the hex nut to tighten filter, but others swear this was not done and still failed at weld points. Not worth the risk IMHO, there are many solutions to filter removal that do not carry this risk.

Just tried to unscrew one last week to change it using the hex and the hex twisted off. Strap wrench took it off easily once I got all the spilled oil off it.

I'd think the Norton mau be less likely to have a spot weld failure on these as filter never sees much oil pressure on the return side. Many bikes have filter on pressure side to engine, so much more stress on potential fail points. But, welds could be shoddy on such thin material, failure may just be a matter of luck.

While I do use K&N air filters on all bikes , I read several yrs ago the warnings re:K&N oil filter failure , glad I have stuck with the Hi-Flo oil filters ….

If I have it right, the hiflo that fits right on is 9 bucks cdn at Fortnine.
The Wix number mentioned, which I believe requires the threaded bushing, is about $20 CDn.
You get the smart shopper award too!

@dynodave had done bypass pressure valve testing, and listed it on his test results.

The O'Reilly MGL51348 filter is made by Wix and it costs $5.79US. They have a fancier Select version for $9.99US. The Wix is $12.99US. It's a 5 minute drive to the autoparts store. It's a 5 day wait from AN and the shipping cost from AN would pay for the cNw thread adapter. And you'd only have to pay for the adapter once.

I read a little of the DD filter report 3 years ago when I ran out of the case of Crossland filters I had, and looked into getting a filter from NAPA, but I would have to order it rather than go pick it off the shelf at O'Reilly like I do now. When I found out I'd have to order the filter from NAPA I decided to get the adapter from cNw. Do what makes you feel happy. That's what I do. My time is priceless. lol
