They all “seem to work.”I use a Baldwin B474 for my '74 Commando. Specs say - Micron rating is 5 with 8 PSID by pass valve. Seems to work for me ok.
Having no filter “seems to work” too.

Not disputing your statement, but when i had a CX 500 I fitted a new K&N air filter in place of the new standard filter and immediately got an extra 5 m.p.g. , this was also commented in the m/c press by other owners at the time.I've never been a fan of K&N, especially their claims of increased HP. They're certainly better than nothing if you need the clearance in your installation.
Explain, this doesn't make any sense. There’s only a benefit from fitting a less restrictive air filter if the standard filter is too restrictive.
Also- the most economical air/fuel mixture may not be the best mixture.
Because you effectively leaned (weakened) the fuel mixture. Not disputing your statement, but when i had a CX 500 I fitted a new K&N air filter in place of the new standard filter and immediately got an extra 5 m.p.g. , this was also commented in the m/c press by other owners at the time.
Its like everything, some things work, some don't.
No, you misunderstood, the K&N allowed more air/oxygen through. The plug colour stayed the same.Because you effectively leaned (weakened) the fuel mixture.
Surely it's the throttle position that determines the amount of air drawn in?No, you misunderstood, the K&N allowed more air/oxygen through. The plug colour stayed the same.
To an extent, yes, but if your air filter was strangling the amount of air because the old filters were too fine, then without any modifications anywhere else the K&N oil damped filter wins every time.Surely it's the throttle position that determines the amount of air drawn in?
A bit like Norton's infamous black box (allegedlyTo an extent, yes, but if your air filter was strangling the amount of air because the old filters were too fine, then without any modifications anywhere else the K&N oil damped filter wins every time.
I fold my tent. No, you misunderstood, the K&N allowed more air/oxygen through. The plug colour stayed the same.
You have to have done it yourself to believe it, several CX 500 owners said the same as above, don't ask for a technical explanation.I fold my tent.
+1 Perfect! When you've spent money on something you're inclined to believe it's working. You may even subconsciously operate a little diffrently in the case of something supposed to give better mileage.
