IIRC I think comnoz attributed the cam wear to soft lifters? As the lifters wear and score they abrade the cam lobe?

Opinions on the cam and lifter Yves? Well I’m no expert, but I think they’re worn...;)

Ok, seriously, my guess would be that as the other cam lobes appear to look ok, the cam material is not suspect. Therefore, my money is on a soft lifter being the root cause.
I think the same
Yves

I did it on the lobe, it's look Ok, I don't did it on the follower so far.
I plan to do a hardening test in the coming weeks
Yves
The original spec for the cam follower called for RHc 58-60

Of the ~ 100 cam followers I have checked, about 10% did not meet the spec, some by a large margin.

I suspect this has had a lot to do with cam failures over the years.

Hi there,
Here are the works I did in the pass days:
Break in the valves
Water blast the crankcases, job done by Herman aka Mutanawé, wonderfull job like always, after the blasting Herman clean the crankcases with high pressure water jet.
The media Herman use is ceramiek.
To day I go to Frank who own a big ultrasonic machine, so we clean ultrasonic the cases and the head, after I blow all the oil tunnels.
I hope now to have clean parts.
I resurfaced the oil pump also.
Tomorrow I will start with the electric.
Pics will follow this W.E.
Yves

I've seen numerous cam failures on motors made from '73 onwards, where the factory clearly had quality issues.
There have also been a few reports of cam failures from recent manufacture.
I've never seen such failures on Triumph motors, despite having seen lots of very battered cam followers. That said, one new aftermarket cam I ran for only a few miles had shown signs of incipient wear.
As said earlier, a material change to cast iron seems to have been the answer, but some have sheared when tightening the pinion retaining nut.

I don't believe it's just coincidence that the failures seem to occur on the lobes furthest away from the oil pump either?

Are Commando cams hot hardened as (69 and later) Triumphs are?
There were certainly process changes during the production run - what they were I've no idea. All the 750 cams I've seen were black, while the 850 cams had a light grey finish. I think there's some reference to this in the NOC Service notes

Hi There,
Next week I gat a appointment with the two expert dokters for a final rapport about my invalidity.
I hope that the insurance will pay very fast, my feeling is that only a stupe with bank notes can help my broken bones.
To day I start with the elecric harness, not really my speciality.
keep you posted

I say it again; not the retailers but well the makers of the camshaft or followers are guilty, if you don't have the knowledge of metarlurgy, please do donuts!

I am still wayting for my parts from Jim Schmidt, he his still wayting for the coaters for the pistons.
I am also afraid that the parts will take a long time to arrive in Belgium.
Yesterday I was at Frank Jordens his shop, he tell me that he order some parts in the UK, shipment with UPS, the parts stay two weeks in quarantaine in the UK and another two weeks at the custom in Belgium.

I think there is a 'special service' operating from the UK now! Parts from the US may arrive earlier!

(UPS did halt UK to EU service for a while last week!)

Hi There,
Here some pics from the blank assy from my engine, the engine is empty, only the JS 2 Smootramp camshaft is in.
The engine was blasted, after blow with high pressure water, and as least ultrasonis cleaned, every part of the engine separatly of course.
Becouse of the cold, I am not working this week.
I receive a Email from Jim Schmidt: the pistons are underway back from the coaters.
Tomorrow appointment with the two expert dokters for a new expertise.
Keep you posted
Yves

Looking good Yves, thanks for putting up those beautiful photos, also good luck with the doctors. I myself am back at the hospital for my wife, they were successful in removing the brain tumor, but now the skin graft at the back of her sinuses /throat is failing. They are attempting another graft. Again good luck to you with the new doctors. Cj

My best wishes for your wife.
To day a meeting with the expert doctors, they twist my leg in all directions, painfull!
The conclusion is that my hip is in the same condition as my camshaft.
keep you posted

You did make me laugh Yves, and your camshaft is definitely in a "degraded" state. I like your sense of humor Mister ))

hi there,
Good news: the parts from Jim Schmidt are unterway to Belgium, they will be home on February 18.
I al ready pay the VAT, and import taxes, total: 252 Euros.
As soon as I gat the parts, I will bring the cylinder and pistons to Jos for re- bore.
Who is Jos: In the 70 Roger de Coster run a motorcycle shop at Leuven here in Belgium, Jos was the chief engineer from the shop.
Jos is retired now, but he still do works on cylinders.

On February 11 I gat a inspection meeting with the two expert dokters, one is from the insurance and the other is from me.
I already receive the final conclusions from my expert dokter: I receive 25% invalidity. It will take four weeks to have the final conclusions from the two experts.
When my lawer will have the final report we will start the fight with the insurance.
Next week I go back to my workshop.
I hope to finish the bike in four weeks.
Fingers cross
keep you posted
Yves

Yves,

Persistence is an EXCELLENT tool, when used correctly.

As with your project here, I believe you are doing so.
