Actually I find the guys who have been at the top quite funny. They are usually very quiet until you say something to them which can be construed as competitive. Our Ken Blake was a really lovely guy, however you wouldn't want to see him on the grid with his wild eyes on, or do anything which might make him fire up.

You may well be right. There is a point in the BBC documentary where Peter is talking about the death of Jarno Saarinen. He talks about the lack of a top rider to replace him. And then he says "maybe it will be me". So he is sorry Jarno was killled - but he also sees it as an opportunity. He was tough behind the studious engineer face.

I don't doubt that he was a tough guy. Riding a commando against the two strokes would be extremely harrowing and you would tend to get vicious. When I built my Seeley 850, I did not research the race record of the commando, so I never really believed in the bike. I'm actually amazed at its performance, it is much quicker and more nimble than I ever expected. Did Peter Williams/commando ever win races on a dry circuit against the two strokes , where they didn't have DNFs through reliability problems ?
