Finished the other carb this evening. just have to blow them out with air later, as it is 1130pm and the wife gets a little upset if I fire up the compressor at that hour.

So I have pulled the plates from the clutch baskets of the 71 and 73.
Off hand does anyone know what years had the hardened clutch centre? I ask as I have read a bit about the bronze plates ruining clutch hub centres.
I was thinking of using some of these parts to make my 72 combat an easier pull on the clutch by adjusting the stack height.

Bronze plates will also wear the hardened centres eventually.

Hardened clutch centres were supposedly fitted at the same time the 5 bronze clutch plates were introduced according to factory service release N3/28, so from serial 212278-on (late '72).

I noticed that the centre on the 73 that these bronze plates came from is slightly worn, I think it will still be quite serviceable.
Not sure if I will be using the bronze plates.

been a while again since the last post. the project has been progressing slowly as life has its ways of keeping you busy.
however the good news is progress has been made.

Glad to see that, unlike the PO, you got the pistons in the right way this time! At least he didn't try starting it that way. btw, what paint did you use on the bores? I hope to be doing a top-end this winter, and would like a good paint for the jugs.

I have the old type cut away timing cover much like the one you have made. But i found that it only engages on the idler spindle by about 1mm as these type are ment for the twin chain magneto equipped engines. So be careful when using or AN now make a plate of about £20 so no need to make your own.

Hey Nate

Used Dupli-Color Gloss Black engine Enamel. Then oven cured after I believe 24hrs after painting. I called them to get the specifics, they were very helpful on the phone.

Yes.. I peered through the cut out during fitment to eye up satisfactory engagement. the difference in depth is about 1" from commando. so not a lot of coverage indeed.

Hey, you are in luck, there is a great gentleman on Morrow street with a bike frame table that has forgotten more about brit bikes than I know! He recently did close to 20 commando frames through a few S ont. bike repair shops, you would recognise the names. He repaired my squished down tubes from a previous install, oil cooler or highway footrests, and charged me $ 70.00. Send me an email and I'll forward the info. I have a '68 and had the front drum stiffener kit, radiused the linings to match drum, etc. and it still sucked! I now have a '75 hub, grimeca twin pot kit with floating disc, 2 finger front brake! Oh, by the way we could be neighbors, I'm 20 mins SOB (south of Barrie!). Cheers!
