Not much has happened since getting my parts back from the painter. I lost a lot motivation about this project for a while. My British Bike Mentor, Steve, was diagnosed with cancer back in early June/July and has been fighting it since. Back in November though, he lost the battle. My plan this winter was to have him help me break the bike down and replace what internals needed done, ie new pistons, go through the cylinder head, leaky c/s seal, etc. He had worked with my Dad and I at our shop for 20+ years, so it feels a little weird working on this without him here, but I know he is laughing at me from wherever he is.
Our new mechanic had worked with us before and went on to a couple of different shops, but has come back to work with us since Steve's diagnosis/passing. It's not too hard to forget the new guys name, as its also Steve, but he doesn't have the vast knowledge of British machines as our Old Steve did.
With a little free time that we had this afternoon, I talked New Steve into helping me tear the Commando's head and barrels off, she has been using oil at a greater pace recently, so I wanted to fine the root cause of the problems. We got the head pulled off, I know Old Steve was laughing pretty hard when we were trying to pull the head after only removing 9 out of the 10 bolts/nuts. The head sure came off easier once that last nut was removed! The barrels came off pretty easy and the bores looked smooth, but showed some minor rust staining or something. This bike only has 11,6xx miles on her and I am unsure if the head or barrels have been removed before. Everything looked untouched to our eyes. The piston's were still Std. bore.
Next thing to do is get the head torn apart and out to our machinists and have him check it over and start to make a parts list. I also just got a shipment of decal's in from NZ, just gotta figure out what to do on the sidecover decals, as the are not correct for the Roadster models. (Thanks DogT)
