Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have just received notification from Jerry that I have won the 'Most Improved' 2010 competition and I must say that it feels like I have won an Oscar. My thanks go to all of the worthy participants and all those who took the time to vote. This year has started particularly well for me with fellow forum member Davamb featuring two of my bikes in his Commando calendar and L.A.B. sending me a scan of the latest RGM catalogue also featuring two of my bikes on the front cover.

Having won the competition I would like at this juncture to table for discussion a change to the rules and title for next year to simply 'Best Commando Project'. I do feel that some very worthy competition entries were handicapped by not starting from the same appalling collection of bits as my own, or perhaps simply not having a suitable 'before' photo to post. Under the current rules a quite unremarkable bike could win against absolute jewelery if the starting condition was bad enough. I am proud of my S-Type but in all honesty I am hard pressed to see how it is any better than the other three presented by Mark, Alan and Dave (Dog-T), in fact mine in yellow looks positively conservative compared to these glittering examples - I do however have the best growth of bamboo. Other entries that might have won on innovative merit or uniqueness are Grandpaul's mono-shock with Kenny Dreer bodywork, Roy's Dunstall and Dave's proddy Racer. Finally the standard Roadster's classic good looks are a perenial favourite and Frank's understated example and Jim and Tim's Corbin equipped versions just look right to me.

I myself voted for Dave Thomas (Dog-T) because he restored a genuine S-Type back to standard and his regular postings were a great help with my own project and those of many other forum members. Under more flexible criteria and a different title I believe that all of these factors could be taken into account by members when casting their votes, thus hopefully making the competition more competitive and perhaps offering the chance for more entries. I must however state that if the rules remain unchanged, I have another project in an equally parlous state waiting to be entered as soon as entries for 2011 open.

Now down to business, I have given some thought as to the use of the prize money that gives the greatest value to the highest number of people and have been leaning heavily in the direction of providing vicarious pleasure to fellow forum members by investing the money in wine, women and song!

On behalf of all forum members, regarding Wine; I would like Jerry to purchase a bottle of his choice. Women; Jerry is to take the undoubtedly long-suffering Mrs Doe out for a candle-lit dinner where they can consume the aforementioned wine in salubrious surroundings, all the while serenading the good lady with Italian love songs. The remaining funds (if any are left after this gastronomic and terpsichorian extravagance) are to be used for the ongoing running costs of a site that has been a source of information, inspiration and pleasure to so many of us Commando enthusiasts.

All the best for 2011

Bravo.

Dave M is way to gracious, and very kind. It has been an interesting contest and I have to agree that his is the most improved, given that it came from a hair dresser with egregious intent. So the members have voted and reached a good conclusion. I agree with him that maybe the contest could be improved, however given the amount of votes and the quantity of entrants, it is very limited and would be hard to change. I possibly could have won if it had been a 'most original' contest, but that was not in the works. I would have no clue how to arrange the contest and would not want to try.

It has been a very pleasant experience to correspond with some of the entrants outside the forum and all have been very helpful and I hope I have too.

Jerry should get most of the credit, he empowers all this good information transfer and I will be sending a good donation to his efforts. It was my intention too, if I had won, to give the prize to Jerry. Dave M just expressed it more eloquently.

Happy New Year everyone and good Nortoning.

He wins the contest and then gives it all back. Kudos to you, sir!

All of these bikes were very deserving as far as I'm concerned. I'll be entering mine in 2011, but it didn't really start out in "horrible shape" so I do hope the rules are changed somewhat to "best project" or something along those lines. Not that I think my bike will be anything too off-the-wall original or anything.. :)

Congrats to everyone who was a part of this. You should all be very proud.

Bravo and very good of you for helping Jerry, he deserves all the praise he gets for putting up with people like me.

It was hard to cast my vote, so many good looking Nortons and I am glad no one was left out.

Not quite, Dave still retains his winning status!

Congrats Dave on your winning bike! And THANK YOU from all of us for your generous contribution to Jerry who we all know is most deserving of this kind gesture. Happy New Year all!

I am pleasantly suprised to have run such a close second, and couldn't have expressed better what should be done with the winner's booty. (well, not his booty in the NEW booty way, but well, you know what I mean)

Perhaps the rules could be changed, but maybe there is no need to; simply state in the opener that the voters should determine on thier own if they are voting for the most improved based on before & after pix, the most original based on thier knowledge of specifications, or simply thier personal favorite. My original idea was based on the magnitude of the before shot of the sorry hulk and amazing after shot of the same bike that won in '09.

Bottom line, thanx to Jerry for the forum, thanx to the participants for thier submissions, thanx to all who voted, and thanx to everyone who contributed on the forum all year long. I greatly appreciate this place for it's variety and enthusiasm, and total lack of nonsense (well, the BAD kind of nonsense anyway...)

Well, there aren't too many rules to begin with, it is in my view the title 'Most Improved' that limits voters perceptions on what they are voting for. If it was changed to something like 'Best project' then voters could still factor into their decision any before and after shots, but could additionally give consideration for such things as innovative solutions, rare models, correct restoration, regular updates on the site etc. etc. The competition is pretty good as it stands, but these suggestions might encourage a few more members to enter their bikes if there were wider entry parameters.

There are 2851 members on the forum, 89 voted, that's 0.31%, even worse than the US voting rate in an off year. I have no clue how many active members there are, so the 0.31% is probably a useless number. 16 of the 89 people that voted gave money, that's 18%, a very good percentage, probably better than a US presidential rate. I would love to see the types of competition increased, but with only 89 participating, that's too small a quantity to get any result with more than 1 type of competition. Reasonably, I don't think Jerry can do much more than he has.

Thanks again Jerry.

However, the member activity list shows that only around 10% of the registered members use this forum on a regular basis, as about 90% of our members have not logged-in for more than a year.

Well I for one forgot to vote, I was debating between two till the last day & spaced it. However I am sending in a $25.00 donation & agree Jerry, you & Your wife should have a night out on us. The inspiration & help I've gotten here are invaluable. I didn't even know such a thing as a forum existed before I stumbled on this one & frankly I doubt I would have goten anything like the help & knowage base found here. Not to mention this forum is without a doubt the easiest & most intuative to navigate. Congrads to you for winning Dave, stunning bike.

Dog-T, I'm not suggesting that Jerry run more than one competition, or multiple classes within the competition, simply a small change of title that might open it up to those with a worthwhile project who haven't necessarily started with a pile of scrap. This might encourage more members to participate and to vote.

wow, got an RGM catalog in the mail today and there's DaveM's commando on the cover, cool.

Both Commandos on the RGM catalog/ue cover are Dave M's.

If it's any consolation, I didn't get one either, but perhaps mine is on a slow boat to China! Roger at RGM asked if he could use the photo for the cover, to which I happily agreed and it was a pleasant surprise that he opted to use the bike I entered last year as well. I think I must by now have used up my entire 15 minutes of fame
