Fullauto's 850 rebuild

Quaife are still advertising strengthened gearbox shells in magnesium.

Quite right. But they don't make or sell them anymore and haven't for a long time it seems!

It goes like this: contact Quaife... they say you must contact Hemmings... who says they haven't been available 'for years'...

Moving along

Painting the Maney barrels black really 'hides' them doncha think?

I'm sure most folk will never notice they're not stock.

Cool.

I hate to say it, sorry Steve, but they are pig ugly.

I'm with you on the looks, but I am pretty sure Steve was more concerned with function than looks, which with the number of user he has says he did OK there....

Norman White told me they look like a waterpump!

But he doesn't want to get back to making his own alloy barrels.

Looking forward to the future Fullauto product line, when you get around to it ;-)

Both my Commandos have Steve's barrels fitted. He told me he made them to look like the Dunstall type so they would be eligible for classic racing. I am looking forward to seeing the Fullauto ones though, as I have to agree that Steve's are a bit on the gruesome side.
Whilst I was at the crank grinders the other day I had a look at a BMW V10 block which is cast from Alusil. The bores are machined directly in the block, so no liners or coating is required. The cylinders can also be bored oversize & finished using the correct hones. This would be a great way to get tighter tolerance & big weight saving on your new cylinders Ken.
Any thoughts?

Martyn.

Good thought Martyn, its often very hard to find someone to make castings in materials that they are unfamiliar with.

That is an interesting comment.

But back when they started you could only use 750 style because the age cut off was then end of '73, so no 850s. But of course Dunstall parts were around pre '73, without through bolting.

The concession to use 850 engines was made and recorded in the rule book years ago, and of course up to 1007 motors run in 1300 twins.

(Although an 850 has taken the 1300 twins championship with CRMC this year and a certain 750 short stroke is 2nd  )

I think Steve's point was the original style barrels were not available in aluminium, only factory spec. cast iron. You can bet that if he had made them to the original style, someone not using them would have complained.

Yep, I can see that happening, just takes one sore loser.

Personally, I've gone from thinking that, to actually quite liking the 'function over form' statement that they make.

Nothing wrong with the appearance of the Steve Maney barrels to my eye. I like the look of the Hunt magnetos, too.
