When I lived in the tropics, (Peruvian Amazon) I made a wax concoction to soak my chains in. Pure wax was too hard, too much grease attracted dust. Grease mixed with wax didn't stay on good enough. Tar was too sticky and messy and attracted dust. Graphite was important to go down into all the little rollers.
A mixture of all of these seemed to do the trick. Mostly wax, about 2 liters, about 100ml of grease to make it flexible, 100ml of tar to make it stick, 2 cups of graphite to go down into all the little rollers. Clean the chain real good (Like Hobot said.) and dip it down in the melted solution. Leave it in there until it doesn’t bubble any more. Pull it out and let it cool. Then give it one more quick dip to get some of the concoction on the outside. All this work gave about 3 months of hard riding. Works for O’ring and non O’ring chains. If you have two chains then you can just swap chains and do the other one when you have time.
One small precaution: Once when I was melting down the solution I forgot to poke a hole down the middle to let the melted wax at the bottom have some place to go. When my back was turned the whole plug of my precious chain wax shot out of the top of the can!!
