Crankcase mods - advice please

I finally tried to drill the hole on the lower left of the oil pump mount.
The case was a full 1" thick at this point! The new hole emerged right on a rib on the inside of the case-red arrow.
The new hole is about 2" lower than the original drain back hole on the rear of the case flange.

Crankcase mods - advice please

Not sure i have seen that before and wonder why?
 
an 850 I am doing was half in half out of a rib and yes it is thick there.

Two questions for Jim....does that hole go through parallel with barrel seat or point a few degrees down and is it 1/4"? Thanks.

I bore them parrallel with the barrel seat. 1/4 inch is correct. Jim
