Is this normal - advice please

Ok - next installment.....purchased a tap & die set today to clean out the threads and it's been quite successful so far.......

Completed one standoff and it goes straight in - happy. It's not pretty, but it goes in. It'll be loctite'd in so fingers crossed they'll hold. I'll do the other tomorrow as it's time for a beer!

Also got the hub off and thankfully the rivets look ok

Stu was amazing help this morning via Whatsapp and advised me to clean out the crap left behind as when the posts come out, the wee peened bit on the back falls down.......as you can see I have shrapnel in there as a result - so THANK YOU to Stu for telling me to do this....

And finally for tonight, here's the back of the hub for anyone interested....

New clutch plates are soaking in oil now ready for tomorrow. I'm quietly confident!

To inspect the riveting, you have to remove the clutch unit completely. The side of the rivets that you see there would just sit in a jig during sub-assembly, with the peening over being done on the otherside. Whilst its removed, you can also reinstall the starter ring gear as per the revised assembly procedure.

So here we go....DONE! Super happy...haven't plucked up the courage to start it yet...clutch feels good though and no funny noises. Will start it later (possibly!) just leaving it to see if it leaks for now

Got the threads cleaned out and re-fitted the posts....

Back in the bike...spinning freely...

Springs were a pain to get bolted in. Clearly there's a technique to it that I don't know....

New gasket time....

Done!!!!

Worked up the courage to start it....still clunks into 1st but it did that previously so not really concerned. Once I stopped the video, I drove it on the paddock stand a little bit in 1st to 3rd and nothing sounded broken.....happy so far.

Final update....test ride done. Only went about 2 miles but went through the gears a few times and all seems fine. Quite clunky into 1st though.

Yeh works a treat - thank you. I bought it almost 2 years ago and left it....don't know why, but I did. Fitted it not long ago and it took like 5mins! Don't know why I didn't do it sooner!

Hi Stu , Don't you run the breather tube under the starter ? Less visible .

Stu sent me a video explaining install and Norton routed it that way but he prefers the simple routing

That said, the vid was about 18 months ago so things may have changed!

The tube doesn't like the direct contact heat, being wedged between starter and crankcase. Also, my route means to can neatly tuck the wiring underneath

This is where I run mine , no issues . I bought this from David Coote .

Run it which ever way you prefer.....this is why I give my kits tube an extra inch or two, so people have a choice of routing. I run mine nice and free flowing, instead of up and down like a roller coaster, straight out to atmosphere. Besides, the routing is the least of the 961s problems when it comes to tidiness in that area

Stu, what’s the story with the welded on plates at each end of the springs? Do they go all the way through?

Can't answer your question Cliff.....but just wanted to say, my anxiety is through the roof after doing this work!!! Leave on Friday and will shove about 1k miles on the bike and paranoid about issues!

Hi Kev, actually the question was directed at Stu, as I’ve never seen those plates on a clutch before.

Relax, I’m sure the bike will be fine. Did the mystery noise disappear after the work you did?

Anyway, please post pics of your visit to the island.

Yeh I go every year but the first time on the Norton - will definitely be pics!

The weird noise has gone. Is clunky into 1st and can't remember if it was worse previously or not so will just live with it for now.

Last few years I've been on my multistrada which is like a sofa. Prior to that I was on sportbikes which was AGONY!

Norton can't be worse than that!
