Is this normal - advice please

Yeh I go every year but the first time on the Norton - will definitely be pics!

The weird noise has gone. Is clunky into 1st and can't remember if it was worse previously or not so will just live with it for now.
They all clunk into 1st. The new clutch pack will break in and this should get better. If you want to hear a N to 1st gear clunk just listen to my Harley !

Last few years I've been on my multistrada which is like a sofa. Prior to that I was on sportbikes which was AGONY!

Norton can't be worse than that!
If you can do it the bike can. The most I've gone is 670 miles just stopping for gas , from Welland Ontario Canada (Cootes) to Milwaukee WI . So Yeah , it can do it you just gotta get past that first 500 and with interstate this doesn't take too long .

🤣 🤣 Oh yes it can !!

After one longish run on my CR I was searching for a builders skip within which to deposit said motorcycle. Fortunately I couldn’t find a skip, so I instead got Norton to swap the clip ons for Sports bars !

I’ll be interested in your post trip feedback…

Interestingly....the only reason I'm taking the Norton is that my mate has picked up a Thruxton Chrome edition. That has weird halfway bars that are clip-on looks but a wee bit higher. Looking forward to trying them out when over there.

My money is on you NOT calling them weird in a weeks time !

Ditto on that.
My longest ride on my CR in one day was 240 miles.
By the end of the day my back and wrists were screaming STOP!
My Ducati 999 is a rolling medieval rack, the 961 is better, but not by a whole lot.
I may have a shop here install ABM clip-ons in place of the factory CR units.
It will be a bitch to deal with the hydraulic lines, throttle cable, and control wires, but this should make the thing rideable for my ancient body.

A big ride on a the CR for sure - they’d have to hoist me off with a block’n’tackle at every stop!!

Plenty of stops of course; the usual stuff. I’d try not to carry anything on my back that’ll multiply any discomfort! Mates going over in a car? A few beers at the Creg-ny-Baa should get some boot space!

Taking your Norton to the IOM TT - it’s an adventure! Enough pics and we can live it vicariously with ya. Good luck and enjoy Kev - you’re only old once!👍

Yeh my stuff is already over there. Couriered the bulk of it due to the Norton's luggage "challenges". Will have a Kriega pack on me with essentials in it. It's 180 miles to the ferry and as I have literally no idea how many miles I get out of a tank, there will be a few stops!

This is my 12th time over there so the journey is well known but I suspect this year I will learn a few new things with the change of bike!

I find my 1098 and 748 really comfy for sports bikes tbh....ridden the 1098 to the TT before. Took the 748 in a van, as I was working there for a week for Norton, and wanted some personal transport. Got my knee down by the Creg....obviously a riding God 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 I've good a long trip planned this August, doing the NC500...but I'll be on my Drifter 1500 for that.
It all pales in comparison though, when you've got the likes of Graham, riding to Italy and back on a Domi 🤯

To finish this thread off.....I'm home. Bike worked perfectly the entire trip and my clutch work (see earlier in this thread!) was a success. Not going to lie, when I joined the motorway and wound up the revs, and held it there for 3 hours, I was nervous but it was all good. Put in 1.1k miles throughout the week with a run over the mountain to top it off.

Touring/big miles on it weren't as bad as I thought TBH. I think I could push 350-400 in a day if I had too. Maybe more. It wasn't great, I'm not saying it was a tourer....but better than the sportbikes I've taken in the past.

Only thing it needed was fuel and some chain lube. Was making a weird noise so I lubed the chain after a few days and it went away. Another thing to note, the Pirelli Phantom Sportcomp (retro things) are hideous in the wet. Like...awful. Wouldn't even go in a straight line - genuinely shocking.

The bike/tank combo was a real head turner with lots of admirers/photos when it was parked up and as many thumbs up when moving. So that was cool!

Anyway, if you want to see some pics.....

Can you provide a photo of the tire tread please . Just want to make sure of the tire you are referring to .

Yep, those Pirelli's are known to be utterly shite. If you want a retro tread, the Dunlop TT100's I'm running feel nice (can't comment on wet though).

Yeh those were the ones I wanted but nobody had them in stock and all had 3 month (min) lead time so was a definite no as I needed them for the trip so had to go with the Pirelli's. I'll order them over the winter when I'm not time-pressured and pop them on next year.

Dry - they're spot on. No issues whatsoever......but I can't describe how bad they were in the wet. Literally felt like the front & rear weren't connected by the bike in the middle and were doing their own thing. That was going in a straight line. Frightening.
