Alton Starter fittting with Norvil Belt drive

I have purchased an Alton Starter kit and my bike is fitted with a Norvil Belt drive. Has anyone fitted a starter with the Norvil belt? If so, what sort of spacer arrangement did you use? The Alton instructions suggest machining the inside of the front belt sprocket to enable the use of their normal spacer. Just wondering if there is an alternative.

Hi Ian,
yes I've done it. Mine had the added complication of a Steve Maney mainshaft outrigger as well. You can see the procedure here..

As you'll see I did machine the front pulley, but on some of the Alton instructions I've since seen it appears that you can machine the supplied spacer instead.

Thanks Cliffa. Looks like the way to go. Sadly it's become a bigger job than first planned as I've discovered my camshaft is worn so engine is in a lot of pieces at the moment and it's turned into a money pit! C'est la vie.

Check with Alton directly. I kind of remember that they wanted to make a kit for beltdrives but because of the various types available, each type had to be fitted up for the specific belt drive system.

The Alton instructions do include fitting guides for the more popular belt drive kits including Norvil & RGM.

Nice one Nortoniggy, you made short work of the engine rebuild, and it sounds great. I like your Campbray wheels too. Can i ask you a couple of questions. Your brake disc looks like a standard disc only bigger. Am I seeing things? also where did you get your neat rocker spindle end caps? They are nice.

Thanks Cliffa.

I made the rocker end caps. They are aluminium. I just cut some to shape and used countersunk allen screws to secure them. I used two allen grub screws in blind tapped holes in the back of them to hold the rocker shafts in position.

The brake disc must be an optical illusion because it is a standard disc.

I think a combination of the different wheel and the different caliper make it look different. Plus the camera angle.

Strange as I've looked again and it still looks bigger (and thinner) to me. Is that an AP caliper ? how do you find it on a standard disc, is it a big improvement over the original? I like the rocker shaft endcaps. I may replicate them if you have no objection.

Yes it's a Lockheed (AP) racing caliper with a home made bracket to mount it. The caliper alone was a big improvement but I also have a sleeved down master cylinder and use EBC brake pads. It is a very good brake. Better than the twin discs on my airhead BMW in fact.

By all means copy the endcaps. I think they look a lot neater than the stock ones.
