Norvil belt drive and clutch

Hello All. Just installed a Norvil belt drive and new clutch but the clutch lever is very hard and cannot free the clutch plates. Pretty sure the kit is correctly fitted and suspect some problem at either the gearbox end of the clutch rod mechanism or the new clutch plates binding in the clutch basket. Has anyone experienced and overcome this problem?

The actuator the cable connects to on the gearbox end of the mainshaft can drop and give the symptoms you describe.

Without wishing to reply to myself I've decided it can't be the clutch plates binding in the clutch basket as the clutch lever only acts on the diaphragm spring so it must be a loss of leverage on the clutch push rod. I am not familiar with the push rod operating mechanism. It appears to move the push rod about 10mm but perhaps something has changed to reduce the leverage. Does anyone have a photo of what I should see when I remove the small round cover on the gearbox?

Take the gearbox inspection plate off
You will see a metal plate that the cable attaches too
You will find it has dropped down out of position

The pressed steel lever the cable connects to has a steel ball that is the fulcrum. When you take the old cable off the lever falls out of place. Remove the small inspection cover on the outer gearbox cover, loosen the cable then push the lever up into place with your finger or a screw driver. The top of the lever should be pointing outward at about 45 degrees.

Should be approximately 3.3mm.

In order to get the lever back into position, the adjuster in the center of the diaphragm spring needs to be backed off several turns. The clutch lever adjuster should be backed off as well. Once you have it back into position, screw the adjuster in to take up all the slack, then back it off one full turn and tighten the jam nut.

Then adjust the lever adjuster so that there is roughly 1/8" of free play in the lever.
