Alton starter motor kits - good?

When you "torque check" (in the absence of locktite) should the fastener be backed off a bit first?

IMO:

If you’re looking for an accurate setting, yes.

If you’re checking for security on a fixing like this, not necessary. Just apply torque until it moves a tad and check the value. A little over torque won’t hurt and it’s not a fixing liable to seizing (it’s in an oil bath).

Alton starter motor kits - good?


One thing I have contemplated doing is to make a soft aluminium woodruff key to replace the steel one in the crankshaft. That way if the sprag does happen to come loose it will shear without damaging the crankshaft.
