961 sensor thread

P6-500
I've fitted the only part listed by Electrex for the Norton 961, exactly the same as any other workshop would have done. As that part is listed for the 961, it has full warranty cover from the supplier. The crank sensor is not listed for the 961.
In future if people want me to fit their own supplied parts, by all means, supply them.

Not a sensor I know but my 2024 Commando developed a fault with the idle control valve. As soon as the throttle was closed the engine would stop. Nice chaps at the Norton factory fitted a new one for me while I waited with a coffee. The valve was stuck in closed position, so no air was getting into the engine to maintain idle. They told me the part had been upgraded.

That is good to know , might you be able to see what the new Idle motor part number or brand is ?

P6-500 , Ok got it. Thank you . They were selling those alone but you had to solder the wires to the old connector after pushing the wires through the seal first.

I didn't know until I searched what you mentioned. That seems to be the only 500 listed though....bit again, not listed for a 961.
I'll email them later, and see what they say...see if they'll list it as a specific 961 component. Until then though, I need to fit the part that they list for the 961, which is the complete unit as supplied to Norton. If someone has a bike in with me and they want me to fit their own supplied parts though, I'm perfectly happy with that....as long as they double check the parts are correct and I'm not kept waiting for them, as I don't have the space for any more broken bikes to be sat around here.

Thank You for being so helpful . You are the best !

Good source/seller for the IAV. Great price - free postage (if slow). Genuine Magneti Marelli.

Thanks for the source Stephen. Thats one I overlooked. I have ordered and received some sensors
already and waiting for them to arrive to change them all at once.

I had thought the Electrex sensor might be the most complicated to change but looking at the bike last night it looks like the Speed Sensor may not be so easy.
Am I correct in thinking that the starter motor has to be removed in order to replace that sensor ?

No I want to replace all the sensors while I'm at it
An observation only (no criticism), but not all of the sensors on the Donny bikes were knock off as far as I’m aware and some have not been problematic (again, AFAIK). I guess the Speed Sensor may be an example(?), as with others that may require stripping of assemblies/engine components in order to change. I get the approach, if only for peace of mind, I just wonder whether there may be potential to create difficulties where none existed previously. Given how fickle the Donny 961 is. My thoughts only.

I’m slowly collecting the most commonly failing sensors/ components and will replace them if/when I have difficulty. I guess it also depends on how we’re using our bikes. My CR is for carving up the twisties on the weekend (and sitting outside local cafe’s of course;)) so I’m rarely more than 200 km from home - a short lift via roadside recovery. If you’re touring distance, or don’t have other bikes to fall back on then it’s a different matter of course.

I'd love to find out exactly whats causing the issue on mine that I need only change that one. Luckily these sensor parts are available.

Can you describe again what is happening to your bike ? I'm not aware of the extent , it happens when you do what and how often ?

Bike bogs down around 3.5-4K RPMs. When I back off the throttle it picks up again and then repeats. Bike wont make power. I've nursed it home a couple of times now like this.
The only clue I have is sometimes it wont start. Lights on, clutch in, side stand down nothing not even a click but when I roll it forward a little it'll fit right up. That's whats making me think its a sensor issues. I've been checking every wire connection looking for something loose but haven't found anything yet.
But heres the thing its very intermittent. Last Saturday it ran like a top, no issues. Its a headscratcher

Have you replaced the cam position sensor and TPS yet ?

Not yet
TPS just arrived with todays post which is pretty fast as I ordered it on Friday from a seller in the UK

Can I ask where you got the TPS? Some are marked Magneti Marelli and other genuine sensors are marked CTS - It appears these are made for Magneti Marelli by CTS.

Donated my spare which was supposed to be MM (and ended up being a Chinese knock-off - no markings) the other day. Fixed his bike - not sure for how long though.

JFB Spares

A seller on EBay is where I got mine. Seller has 100% rating with 1000's of sales. Its a Magneti Marelli no mention of CTS anywhere on it. I'll take some pix of it tomorrow so you can cross reference the serial #'s

Thanks mate - no need. That’s the link posted at #53. Glad you received the genuine article - you never know until you get it in your sticky mitts. I’ll order one today.

Hope you get your bike repaired soonest👍.

DOH!!!

Can someone tell me what is Heat Lube or what is the American equivalent?
Yes I googled it and you dont want to do that 🤦‍♂️
Strange its not listed on the Torque and Locking Agent table

Description. Component Torque. Nm Remarks
Sensor, Temperature 15 Heat Lube

Torque and Locking Agent

The following tables list the tightening torque for the major fasteners requiring use of anon-permanent locking agent or liquid gasket.

Letters used in the “Remarks” column mean:

Letters Mean

L Apply a non-permanent locking agent to the threads.

LG Apply liquid gasket to the threads.
LH Left-hand threads.
M Apply molybdenum disulfide grease.

O Apply oil to the threads and seating surface.
S Tighten the fasteners following the specified sequence.SS Apply silicone.
St Stake the fasteners to prevent loosening.
R Replacement parts.
1375B Threebond - Green (thread lock strong) bearing
1305 Threebond - Green (thread lock strong)
1327 Threebond - Red (thread lock medium)
1344E Threebond - Blue (thread lock weak)
EX-P Extreme pressure lubricant
1217H Threebond – Liquid gasket gray (RTV)
