Geeee it looks the same to me (from here anyway) u cant really tell unless ur a serious enthusiast thats seen the original up close lots of times, looks great Dave!

I wonder if you could custom mix the flakes? I know you can buy different colors and if you have the original paint it could probably be matched. The blue does look pretty close, but ya never know with pictures. If you have that piece of original paint left you really ought to save it somewhere safe for future reference. Don't think original fire flake blue is easy to come by for samples.

My understanding of painting metal flakes is that it is a time consuming process and you have to know what you are doing, which I don't. The original is a gel coat, and I am sure that is not available any more. I have no idea how they painted these fiberglass tanks and panels. Most of the samples of the recent reproduction Fireflake Blue that I have seen has gold in it and I would not be happy with that. The original could probably be reproduced, but you would pay an arm and leg for the workup to get the correct look. For the price, I am happy with this at least until I can get the ethanol situation under control, I am going to use avgas meantime.

I have the tank clear coated today, but with a spray can, it is pretty sketchy, I think I am going to have to sand it with 2500 and buff it to get the shine consistent over the tank. The panels were easy, they were so small, but I can't control a clear coat spray can across the tank.

Dave I've done rattle can clear to nice shine, but lots of elbow grease with rubbing and buffing compound. Will try power tool and wheels next time.

Dave,
Absolutely fantastic! I totally agree with BB220 about the front brake. Got a box full o' stuff from OB's and am about to assemble the primary (probably after holiday) but still proceeding at a turtle pace.
Wow, yours is coming together nicely. Thanks for the posts, they help all of us in one way or another. I will be paying a lot of attetion to the suggestions re the pre lubing of the engine.
A friend has a theory but I want ot hear others first . We'll go from there.

Enjoy that well deserved margurita my friend!

Best Wishes,

Tom

Tom,
Re; pre-lubing of the engine, I have been giving that a lot of thought lately, I don't want to start this thing and have it seize up because of lack of lube. What I am thinking is I will fill the tank with 50W, and take my 1/2" Milwaukee hand drill and attach a 15/16" socket to it, take the plugs out, open the throttle, and start cranking CCW on the crankshaft in the primary until I see oil coming out of the tank return, the rockers and what ever else I can see. If I can see that I will feel confident that the oil lines are not plugged and the pump is doing it's job. Whattaya think?

Dave I didn't realize the paint was can paint. Does it hold up well enough to endure a bit of the abuse the elements dish out? The only reason I ask is I use black can paint for frame touch up, but have to go over it about every year.

The flake used on my 850 came from Global metalflake souced from USA , my painter is using a purple flake for my 70 that he has sourced locally but i have seen quite a bit of flake on Ebay.

Well, I'm covering the base coat with clear coat Dupli-Color high performance wheel coating which is supposed to be a bit resistant to gas and oil. I don't know how it will last, all I know is that I can't afford a $700 paint job to have it ruined by the gas coming out of the F/G. Until I can afford a steel tank, I'm going the cheap route and using ethanol free avgas and see how the paint holds up. This thing will be under roof most of it's future life. I can live with it and repaint it every couple of years for $30.

I hope I haven't dissapointed anyone.

Hell no, I was just curious. I wish I could do my own paint, but I don't have the facilities or the patience it takes to go through all of the steps. I currently need to repaint 5 tanks and three sets of side covers, expense that makes my head spin. Seems like it all goes at once.

I tested a handful of rattle can clear coats and found Dupli-Color clear wheel both the least blocking of what's under and to resist fluids expect for maybe brake fluid though maybe that two being made for wheels. Just can't lay on too much at once or krinkles up and gives yellowish tint. Wish I'd done Trixie front rim before hanging a couple years in shed rusting.
Striking blue will turn heads everywhere.

Hobot,
Yes, I noticed right away that the wheel clear coat can easily be applied too thick right away and clouds up, but does clear up after drying unless too, too heavy. Trouble is painting outside on the patio which at least is covered by deck, the wind blows the paint around and when I turn the tank around, the overspray goes to the other side and looks like sand. I'm hoping I can 2500 sand/buff the stuff out to a consistent shine over the surface. If not, another issue, but it will hold avgas anyhow.

Yes, I am really sorry I overcoated the Fireflake Blue back in probably 75 with black because I thought it was the thing to do with all those gold pinstripes and all. UGH. It's so hard to go back. You pay the penalty for unbridled youth.

Dave,

I'm still gonna do some more question asking before I weigh in on the procedure but; As for the oil choice, I'm going to go with Rotella T 15W40. A. I think that the multi vis will get through the engine faster, B. Rotella T still has ZINC! an important element in break in.Seems the EPA doesn't like zinc either and has had it removed from most motor oils. Some fellas around here have had cam failure and main bearing s wipe even though they used " break in oil suppliments" in auto engines. My friend Paulie builds engines for spec E30 SCCA BMW.s and T has been his oil of choice with no failures that i know of.
More food for thought and certain to spark some other opinions.

Again, fantastic work so far,

Tom

Petrol tank clear coated and sanded with 1000, 2500 and polished with "Scratch Out". There are 3 little holes in the paint job. Don't know if it was in the F/G or something happened along the way, but I haven't banged it on anything. I may try to fill and polish them out with clear. Waiting on decals. Amal shipped today.

Side panels are on page 9. I didn't sand and buff them so they are a bit more mat, wish I had done that before the decals, too late now. I'm not going back to revisit them unless I need to.

Oil tank, oil lines test fitting. Inside timing cover block is return goes to in on filter right side. Out on filter (center) goes to return on oil tank. Feed line from tank goes to outside of block. Did I get this right?
