well, it was bought as a 73 before i knew anything about them. engine, gearbox, and head plate say 2214xx. since then ive found out its got an early frame. centre stand on frame, vertical plate for side stand, old style oil tank and bat tray, bolt up rear brake. though it has a disk front it has a front stainless mudguard with a single rear stay. was wondering if there are any more differences?

Do you ever come to Christchurch? as i have all 3 - 69 fastback, 70S and 74 850.
Regards Al

Do you know much about this one?

yes it belongs to Ray a long time norton fan who has been building lovely norton specials for a number of years he has also grfted a combat motor and gearbox into an oil in frame bsa rolling chassie.

Front brake all but nipped up. Need to get back to the motor. I want to force oil through the crank until I see it come out the journals before I put the timing cover on. Any good ideas?

Timing cover fitted, cylinder re-installed and torqued, head just sitting there to see what it looks like. I pumped a bunch of oil in the crank with that pump bottle and a piece of tape over the end of the crank to keep it from leaking all over. Waiting on a mushroom adjuster to put the head back on and get on with timing.

Received used RH exhaust rocker arm this evening. Mushroom adjuster screws in just fine, unlike the original. Installed 2 shims to get the adjuster centered on the valve and head is ready to install.

That thackary washer looks over compressed, have you put a thicker plain washer in at the other end?

If you're trying to get better alignment with the valve stem I would have used bronze spacers and dropped the thackaries.

Mushroom washers came from Walridge. According to Mick in his DVD, you can put up to 4 washers in to align the adjusters (I used 2 and I still have play when I press the arm against the thackary), he only mentions brass washers for his race engines. How do the bronze ones work if you don't need the thackary? These can always easily be changed without breaking down the motor.

I assembled mine without the thackery washers and shimmed the rocker arm over, measured the remaining gap and made up the bronze spacers to suit.

Looking at the picture that one's a little bit out but not enough to matter.

God that front wheel is so sexy compared to the ugly disc models of later years.

It didn't look so sexy when I started! Those are all the same parts except the spokes and rims and tyre of course.

Head installed and torqued, rocker covers installed. Valve covers just finger tight until I get the valve lash correct and the AAU timing done.

Dave, that is looking sharp! I just love the artwork of the 750 motors with brass header nuts and drum front wheel. A mate with an 850 is infatuated with that early look, he had brass header nuts made up and then went and had the airbox mesh gold plated to match! Got to say its looks bloody excellent.

If you have any play at all with the Thackery's you're fine. The bronze spacers are fine in theory but a PITA to set up. For one thing the one's I've seen are brass not bronze and are very soft and they need to be fitted for play in addition to centering the rocker. The effort may not be justified by the benefit on a regular street motor, IMHO.
I've never tired it but you could probably warm up the engine then pull the shafts out without damaging the head. I bought a second-hand head that has one of the bores that was ruined by someone who pulled a shaft out cold. BTW, if you have a spare worn out shaft you can chuck it in a drill and dress it down with emorycoth so it's a slide fit cold and use it for checking all the rockers during the build.

BB220,
I think you are referencing the front brake. Wait until I get some cables on it and the chromed fender/stays then it might be a possibility.
