My primary has been apart for a while. I have the shop manual but it is not clear to me where everything goes in sequence. At the front of the primary, I need th exact sequence of assembly, drive sprocket, flat washers, thrust washers, sprag, large starter gear, stator and rotor etc. I can't find an exact diagram that shows where everything goes. Any help would be appreciated.

It looks like I was installing everything correctly. The problem is that the new sprag I have is slightly off. it fits inside the starter gear but the starter gear will not go into the inner opening of the sprag when it is in the engine sprocket. I have had the sprag for years as a spare manufactured by Stieber. The starter drive gear fits inside the sprag, but it will not go into the engine sprocket. Have to buy a new sprag.

It may be necessary to spin the starter gear (in the clockwise direction so the sprags lay down) before it will go into the sprag.
I can't see that buying a new sprag is likely to be any different.

I will give it a try. Previous one went in easily.

Don't forget the gasket ( 06 - 6570 ) between the tensioner body and the cover plate ...
It is not pictorially shown in the parts manual and easy to forget if this is installation new to you ..
Been there , done it .

Yes, I did get the gasket. Having a tough time getting the sprag into the drive sprocket, compressing law the "bones".

Take a deep breath, you can do this! Wiggle, jiggle, tap, curse and repeat. I’ve found that rotating the sprag while inserting helpful. I’ve torn apart my primary at least five times and that sprag is the most fiddley thing in there.
