Will this stator/rotor work for me?

Hi Guys,

I bought my commando as a pile of bits and have added missing parts by finding them on fleabay..!

I have no wiring so I am going to go with trying to make it a negative ground system with a modern regulator and rectifier from a honda CB400 superdream (nighthawk in the USA?).

I want to run an electronic ignition as I have no ignition components at all, so will go with pazon smart-fire PD2 CDI to do away with coils.

This ignition system might be overkill for my needs, but I like the sound of it!

Down to the question then:

I bought the stator/rotor off ebay, it was listed as norton commando but now I am not so sure.

The Stator has P/N 47122A and from what I can find in google is an AJS part!
The rotor has P/N 466177 which seems to be Commando.

Three wires off the stator and 6 coils.

Will this fit?
Will it work? (assuming it is not faulty of course)
What voltage and wattage (or amperage) might it supply? (Am I right in thinking that the reg/rec will give me 12v)

In short, will it be enough to run a pazon ignition and a front light/rear light and brake light?

See pictures of the stator/rotor.

Thanks,

Mike.

It isn't, it appears to be an RM15 stator from about 1960 - so it's not Commando, and the rotor seems to be from around the same period as the stator.

If it worked, it could be wired for 12V output (by connecting the green/black and green/yellow stator wires together ahead of the rectifier) however it's only likely to produce around 80W maximum, and that ancient rotor could self-destruct.

Isn't the air gap between stator and rotor supposed to be something like (from memory) 7 or 8 thou? If it's overly large I have to expect it's not going to generate as much power. Your gap looks HUGE, comparatively (to 7 or 8 thou) speaking.

Looking at the age of the rotor and stator I think you'd be better off buying a new (cheapish) Wassel set, if cash is no problem go for a high output 3 phase stator.
You can check the rotor you've got, try lifting it with a large wrench or tire lever, it should be able to hold its own weight, if it falls on your toe you know you need to replace it :) Having said that, I would still have issues with it as its not unknown for old rotor centers to come loose.

I've got this set fitted to my bike and they work perfectly.

Or the 3 phase, if you need more power

That thing looks like a great candidate for that time-honored sport of "Stator Toss."

It's kind of a cross between the discus throw and a bolo.

Best performed away from windows.

Then again, maybe you can put it (and the rotor) back on ebay and get something for them.

Seriously though, putting 50 year old electrical equipment on a rebuild, especially when there are inexpensive modern alternatives, is not a great idea.

As a matter of fact, I'm putting a brand new stator on my Harley softail tomorrow - it costs $50 from the dealer.

Second hand, old, questionable electric components, in my experience, are just not worth the risk - kind of like tires and brakes.

Good luck.

The photo is misleading, the gap between stator and rotor is within spec.

I might try this set up first sith a Superdream reg/rec to see what happens.

If it doesn't work I'll get a 3 phase stator/rotor.

Everything else is 40 years old, even me...

Can't change it all...

Mike
