Other than the casting pinhole in the spring seating, what is the major issue here?

What's wrong with this picture?

It either and exhaust guide or an early intake guide. No seal.
Yes, It appears to have exhaust guides in the intakes. You say perhaps early guide with no seals? What should I expect from this? Other than replacement, is there any wisdom you can shed?

Engines that lubed the head from the oil return line did not use valve seals and got along fine as there was very little oil in the head.

When they went to the full pressure line to the head they found they had an oil consumption problem so they went to seals on the intake valves- after some time of course. They had to bring in some bikes in the 68-69 range and install seals to stop the smoking. Jim

So this would require guide replacement due to the fact that they sit much higher and there is no provision machined to retain valve seal?

Mine had the seal-less guides and it never smoked except when it would wet sump. But then I only put 14K on it .

It would require guide replacement. Or at least machining it for a seal in place would be more difficult than replacing it.

As I recall the dealers only repaired the bikes when the owners complained about smoking so not all of them were done. I would not consider putting one together without seals to see if it smokes too much. Jim

I hear that. This crap is getting to be a bit of a pisser.

If the end of the guide is 1/2'' there used to be auto typestem seal with a interference fit on the guide, for a 8mm stem from memory but 0.0025'' wont make any difference, spot face the end of the guide down if it is to long and tap the seal on.
The seal may have been from early datsun 1200 but can't remember for sure
