What's happening at Norton? Sale to TVS, massive investment, new bikes...

BSA have a 'factory' in the UK, but so far all bikes are being made in India... whether they'll ever be built in the UK who knows.. then again if they are, they'll no doubt be assembled from imported parts.

The above vids are interesting, but don’t really reflect the segment of the market Norton is aiming to target. That said, at some stage they’re gonna have to generate volume sales - likely via Honsur.

Difficult market in some locations currently. Lots of manufacturers discounting heavily. Got to be of concern to Norton, with new models pending release.

Agreed, but you only have to look at the bikes being released in India, for sale in India in the near future, clearly TVS cannot sit back and let others in. The 400 - 850 sector is going to be where they need to be.

Ride a brand new Norton for two years for just over £1700…

That’s crazy.

Reduce your drinking by 3 pints a week, improve your health, AND enjoy a free Norton!

The only thing that I can’t work out here is how the f**k anyone is making any profit ??

No doubt they’ll tap into that market at some stage Mn, but agree with it or not all roads appear to lead to the premium bike sector initially. That just does’nt fit the budget sector you refer to (for Europe/US) - those outlined in the above vids.

But as we’ve said before volume of sales is essential to long term success, which is (very) unlikely to come from the premium bike sector alone - especially in the current market. No doubt they’ll start to pump out more budget offerings (for given markets) from India, at some stage of the game. Then to Europe also I guess - who knows!

No doubt it’s confusing FE - appears to be a lease/purchase option of some sort. Excess mileage charge, beyong 2000 miles! They get their full asking price inside of 24 months unless you give the bike back; 3500 deposit? No doubt the returning of any bike would end up being more beneficial to Norton. Gotta love the fine print.

Seems they’re using every trick in the book, as lots of manufacturers do. On face value though it seems to be working, after a fashion, They appear to be selling steadily - new owners popping up on the socials regularly.

Offer ends 31 Dec. Maybe this is part of the final push before new models are released and the 961 gets the can! Whatever they’re doing, let’s just hope it works!

I don’t think it’s confusing… I think it’s an unbelievably good bargain !

With decreasing sales of large capacity bikes, dealers closing by the bucket load, they are truly gambling on the future value of the bike after 2 years. I suspect they hope owners don't hand the bike back. It looks like an initial loss leader to tempt owners back to PX in two years time for a new model where the money will be made or they break even.

IV recently brought a 961 on this deal. It's a no brainer for me. Two years interest free. I can sit the money in the bank for two years let it get some interest then pay the final payment. Even if you don't have the full amount at hand to pay you can take a loan from the bank for a year or two to pay your short fall at then end and still save on the cost of a 4 year loan.
I looked at 2nd hand TVS Nortons and X demo they were going for around 12 to 13 k I got mine for 16k new two year warranty and no interest.
It's the 1st new bike I have ever brought and probably the last lol.

I worked for a manufacturing company that started a leasing company to allow the plants to buy machinery with part of the cost now going to the leasing subsidiary and staying internally. The the leasing arm was so successful it started to lease to other companies, ended up owning a fleet of aircraft etc and made more annual profits than the much bigger manufacturing side. Then 2008 can along, asset values tanked and the leasing subsidiary took the whole company into chapter 11.

I hope the leasing company is on the hook for any shortfall in the end valuation and not Norton.

So far, used values of TVS Nortons are holding up very well, certainly better than many of its competitors.. Triumph twins for example. When, or if Norton stop making the 961 I suspect prices may even go up in time.

Used prices are measured in percentage, and I suspect that the used price is below that of Triumph. As for the current deal, it looks like TVS will be wanting to drop the 961 as soon as possible if they have new models due very soon.

speaking to a 'Norton representative' at the NEC show, he said quote '' the 961 has 18 months to 2 years.... probably less ''
