The bad part is you are going to be buying a lot of new parts. The good part is they are readily available.

Hi Lads,

I have no plans, at the moment, to rebuild this engine. My main purpose for stripping was to learn, through a hands on approach, about the MK3 Norton Commando engine.

The secondary purpose was to yeild some spares for my current on the road MK3. The cylinder head & barrels seem fine, I've yet to check the clutch bit + ES parts but so far they all look OK.

I have a feeling the gearbox is going to be mainly full of rust which as others have said does not bode well for the repurposing of the gears!! There's a chap I know who has a beautiful Norton cafe racer who could use the gearbox so I'll donate it to him.

I'm presuming the crank + crankcases will be OK, so all in all I hope to end up with all the major lumps of metal that make up a Norton as spares I can recondition these parts as I see fit and when funds allow

The engine didn't cost me much and the education I'm getting was/is well worth the price of admission

Hi Lads,

Small update.

I donated the gearbox to a fellow Norton owner who said he had a use for it.

I'm going to wait until I get a few specific tools before I split the cases. I don't want to cause damage to the cases or any other parts with the tools I have at the moment + it gives me an excuse to get more tools

Hi click

WHat specifically are you looking for tool wise to get you going again?

Hi J,

This is the list so far:

https://www.oldbritts.com/ob_70601.html

https://www.oldbritts.com/19_064297.html (I don't have the puller claws for the camshaft sprocket)

https://www.oldbritts.com/19_067524.html

http://www.nortonmotors.de/ANIL/Norton% ... art=067335

I know some of these tools are not absolutely necessary but I'm in no hurry & don't want to cause damage to a part.

I'm also considering an investment in a electric hammer wrench, Clarke seem to do an OK one.

That's a head of steam on the tool list. The postie,s going to be humphy backin carrying that lot.

The pinion extractor and a bit of round bar would probably get it to bits, they're not that expensive but if you want a loan you can have mine. A good hide mallet should split the cases,it's always worked for me.

J,

Thanks for the offer, that's very kind of you.

I suppose it's the classic debate we guys tend to have, need or want, do I really need these tools! or . . . . . .

As I said from the outset I'm looking upon this engine strip as a course in the University of Norton, I'll learn lots, probably from my mistakes

Due to work commitments things will be slowing down but I'll pop up a post now & then as I know you guys are on the edge of your seats waiting for the next instalment :D

Hi Click

I have several pullers for commando including the 3 jaw pinion puller. I live near Mullingar and you are welcome to a loan of them. I would like to discuss with you a smoking right hand pot which is using a lot of oil of late.
