 Good one, I might print that out & put it in the workshop :D

The more I strip this engine the more I think it's a low milage engine from a wreck which has been lying in a breakers yard for a LONG time. Everything I've taken off so far seems in very good condition, even the pistons & bore (which I still need to measure!) look good.

I'd say the engine has never been torn down, all the fasteners look virgin.

Maybe all this is wishful thinking, I'll get back to my sludge clean up!!!

Too bad it hadn't been placed on a shelf inside a building. :(

OMG! watch out for swamp dwellers!

I had to evict a few when I took the cover off, nasty little buggers

Well you are lucking out with the swampy muddy oil coating preserving from oxygen similar to dinosaurs found in tar pits. One of my favourite tools I still have from '70's to get covers and case screws out is also big hammer impact powered for fragile fastener preservation ...

Snap!! My one is from the 80's got me out of a lot of tricky situations :D

One of the screws on the gearbox outer cover won't budge, I'll drill this one out. All the others were fine!

need to get a large spanner for the gearbox sprocket, I thought I had one that would fit, I do have the large box spanner for the sump filter nut which is the same size but I can't get the type of leverage I need

Me again!!

Stripping this engine is like watching a Hammer House of Horror episode (cheesy 80's UK horror show) you know they're going to frighten you but you keep watching

I label these pictures "hmmmmmmmmm sludge!"

My optimistic side is saying at least its covered in something hopefully stopping corrosion, time will tell!

Anybody have the number for one of those major companies who sort out oil tanker spillage's

That looks like a beautiful oil/water mixture there. Reminds me of a Taxi driver in Wellington one day. Got to talking about oil changes.
" I don't change the oil. " he said. "Its Cheaper just to top up and recondition the engines more often." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

That much gunk will be an environmental hazard to dispose of properly. Detergent just carry it some where else. Recyclers may take that for a price. I'd mop up most the mess with old clothes rags or paper then gasoline or diesel in a pan then dump the liquid on the paper and rags and light off another big brush pile or just by its lonesome. One of the most funny intense tales along these lines happened to hobbist that regularly worked on stuff in hard pack drive way that one day caught fire and roared a long time as couldn't put out with water just rolling off or floating flames on its surface. On the other hand i use detergent on brake rotors not solvent if very oil/fluid fouled.

Hobots right, paper towel..and a mini bonfire,,or binbag and blue bin. What ever, it's nasty gooo :!: get some gloves on!!!!

Hi Lads,

Lot's of gloves being used, I'm aware of the 'nasty's' contained in old oil!!!

Also I have a recycle centre down the road from me who take waste oil, so no issues with disposal

Small update.

I managed to get the outer gearbox cover off. One screw was stubborn & I had to drill it out.

Somebody else had been at the outer cover or it got a hard knock as there was a fine crack in the casing which became more obvious while I was removing the cover, first casuality

Here's some pics of the inside, we've gone from creatures of the black lagoon (mud & gooey) to snakes & scorpions of the dry dusty desert!

My plan is to get everything soda blasted so I can least check the overall condition & spec of all the bits I have.

I'm actually enjoying this engine strip, it like mechanical archaeology

The bad part is you are going to be buying a lot of new parts. The good part is they are readily available.
