Im on the fence about either topping off the oil level and testing the ride to work again then inspecting oil flow when hot or waiting and installing the breather first. I am a glutton for punishment so I may test first to get info.

Did you ditch the XS650 valve on the timed breather hose? If you haven't, then you really need to.

Yeah! I did that a while ago. I thought about re plumbing it from the rear of the timing side but comnoz beat me to the punch with an offer I couldnt refuse.

With all my reading I ended up buying that XS breather a while ago not knowing it was the wrong move in line with the timed breather. I guess when your green your green! Right now its a straight run from the timed breather to the oil tank. I also went through and replaced all the other lines for good measure. Chain oiler is capped as well...

Re: Pre installation of Comnoz Sump Breather (71 norton)

I would not go to straight 50 weight. I would use 20-50. Straight 50 weight and 20-50 are the same viscosity at running temp. 20-50 will give easier starts. Actually your 15-40 Rotella will work well. Jim

Re: Pre installation of Comnoz Sump Breather (71 norton)

Is someone (RPatton?) able to explain why a Mikes XS50 reed valve should not be used in conjunction with a timed breather?

The timed breather already only allows air movement in one direction. [it only opens as the pistons are descending] A reed valve after that would just add more restriction to something that is already too restricted. Jim

Re: Pre installation of Comnoz Sump Breather (71 norton)

there is more to adding the timing cover breather than just a hose out of the timing chest. with out doing the rest of the steps all you will do is make it worse. when done RIGHT it is better than the timed breather BUT jim;s solution by venting directly out the crank case is the best way to go and his offer show's just how confident he is with his product

Duely noted! Thats good news for me, I will just go ahead and top off the oil to just above the L mark and try that. I have been running this Rotella stuff i na few bikes now without issues, also its cheap! Cheap means I can afford to change it more often! :P

Last thing I want to do is bungle it up! That is why I am good at typing and asking questions I guess!

Thanks for the support, your doing quite a service helping us one bike at a time. Its like a preservation society.

Jim has a hand built oil pump with .000000001 clearances. No chance of 20w slipping by. Us mere mortals think that the straight 50w will seep past our pump gears at a slower rate. Anyways, that's the theory.

As with most things it's always smarter to go with what Jim says.

OK boys I think its gonna be showtime!

I just got an email from my wife and its got a pic of a box coming from Comnoz!!!

I plan on adding the unit to the bike with the same operating oil I am using now 15-40 and. I already refilled the primary with 7oz ATF. All I need is to top off oil and find a bolt to plug the timed breather.

Well it's about time USPS got around to it. Just in time for me to leave for a couple days. I will be watching for the results when I get back on Sunday. Jim

So the unit is adjustable as to where I can place the input for the line so I pulled it apart and rotated it so I could run the breather line down in between the engine and trans.... Its at a good angle and the fitting is easy to get to so I am hoping this is going to be good.

When installing I pulled the sump plug and I believe the last time I pulled it was a week ago and I had somewhere around 700cc of oil in the sump. This time I barely had anything in the sump.

Only thing I didn't get to was getting a bolt in the original timed breather hole. So I couldn't give it a test ride to work today due to this. Were in the middle of a super heat wave anyways and I don't feel good about runnin with the backpack and leathers. Todays friday and I think tomorrow I will evade the heat of the day but maybe do a ride afternoon to test out the sealing of the unit and to get confortable. Then on sunday I may try and break the 50mi distance if I can get the time. Yesterday it was 106 at 7pm!

Re: Pre installation of Comnoz Sump Breather (71 norton)

It is a work of art isn't it? I had to replace my breather hose as well cause it was too old and hard and would not expand over the new valve. For blocking off the old breather port I used a 1/2-20 automotive oil pan drain plug, available at any parts store. Even comes with a new copper gasket.

Re: Pre installation of Comnoz Sump Breather (71 norton)

I had one of those breathers in my hands too. Nice. Too bad it wouldn't fit my 69 because of the frame brace right under the sump. I had to send it back. I hope he makes one for us.

I would rather have the correct matching numbers frame etc but such is life. I think theres a degree of freedom knowing I dont have the "correct" frame for the bike. I feel OK about doing more personalizing.... I fear that if I had the right frame theres a chance I would have the cross bar too!

Update on my situation... I got the bike around the block a few times today. nowhere near 50mi but hopefully this weekend I will get a chance to run it up in some miles to test. I am indeed ready to rock though!
