I would rather get greasy.
I have 8 processors in the shop and 3 in the house to keep running. They can be a pain. I can't imagine keeping a ship full of electronic junk running. Jim

Yeah and you think Lucas electronics is bad, try a ship electronics. They put alot of money into figuring out how to simulate ground!

Tonight when I get off work I am going to look closely at the breather tube feeding the oil tank and the one venting it. I will literally remove them and replace the vent with a catch bottle and short tube too.

and look through them, blow compressed air through them

I vented the oil tank via a short hose to a two pint plastic bottle in the battery compartment, making sure I THAT was vented, as in I did not seal around the vent hose/bottle area

I once observed a Commando with the tank vent hung in a bottle and then the tube sealed so no air freedom

this sealed the entire breather system and oil was puking out everywhere around the engine

I read about that, I will make sur ethe catch bottle is very breathable.

Super easy!

Just throwing this out there, and honestly I didn't read through every post so maybe it has already been addressed. Is it possible that the issue is not with venting the crankcase, but with having too much oil pressure? Do you have an oil pressure gauge on this bike? Is it possible that the PRV is not working properly, or has been set up to release at too high of a pressure? Is it even possible for this to occur where oil would force the crank seal out before it would simply dump into the engine case?

I know an easier way to find ground in a ship. Just put me at the wheel. Jim

We fly out to Italy a few times during the build to look out for that type stuff!

Thats a great one!

OK I ripped the long breather tube out and recut some new tube then installed a catch can. I took a old "pedialite" can and drilled holes in the top then shoved the tube in there. I then placed the can next to the battery in the tray. Hopefully it doesn't overfill. its about 8oz or so... Looks like a mini can o beans. Very hillbilly for now. (Especially since I am already using a freakin bungee cord for holding the battery in.)

I am stuck waiting though as I don't want to put the timing case back on without a new conical seal!

Ah I HATE this part, I am always waiting and hoping for parts right before the weekend!!!!

The tube seemed bent a little but I blew through it to check and it had some sludge in it. Now the breather is about 8 inches long and free breathing into the drilled can.

Took the bike apart for the *last* time...

Rebuilt Oil Pump, lapped and reassembled

Rerouted Oil tank breather to a overflow catch can next to battery

gave the trans a new shift oring and refreshed timing and trans seals

re routed the ignition wires and re mounted the tank a little better

replaced the cork on the oil tank lid

replaced the rubber on the fuel door

Took the bike out today and saw what it was like to overfill the oil tank. I filled the catchcan promptly. I did notice the primary did not fill though. So After this mess I ended up taking the battery out and cleaning out the battery box then cleaning the wiring up a bit in there too.

Now off for an official ride to test and I got pretty far today, I was able to put about 70 miles on the bike without the primary filling up.

I am going to head to work this week and try to get it to leak again. I am seeing a definite difference now that the catch can is installed. It has been a bunch of things done so I cannot attribut any one thing to the fix, I can however say that the bike is running pretty darned tight after all the mods and fixes including the sump breather. I will be keeping that breather since it does a much more efficient job at managing the crankcase pressure than that of the stock timed breather, it also eliminates the need to have the line running from the timed breather that I did not like looking at either.

Heres the Can O Beans catch can... I ordered a cool anodized one but this is the shade tree fix I rigged up. I also since have gotton ird of the bungee cord. That thing was horrible.

Here is a pic of the bike in front of "Rock Inn" in Lake Hughes. Great little place to stop in thats nested in the middle of tons of cool roads to ride around at.

Cool can o beans in the shot....

Turns out the owner of Rock Inn has a 73 commando too. I talked with him a bit then we rolled out and things went well. He has vintage night 1st weds of the month every month. I have been going here for years and never knew!

Cheers,

On the old britts site I see #26 which sits between the feed valve and the conical seal. I did not have this on my pump.

Most people probably never have reason to do it, but the nipple on the oil pump that feeds into the timing cover can be driven out of the pump body from behind if you wield the right sized drift at the right angle when the pump is apart. Sometimes when you drive that nipple out of an old pump body you will find shims behind IT and the body, which would adjust the pressure the pump conical seal is under....

Yeah I ended up putting one really small shim under it. Just for good measure I did it and I was thinking maybe it will hlep for next time I remove the timing cover and replace the seal. It wont have a problem sticking to the oil pump or anything.
