Took the bike apart for the *last* time...
Rebuilt Oil Pump, lapped and reassembled
Rerouted Oil tank breather to a overflow catch can next to battery
gave the trans a new shift oring and refreshed timing and trans seals
re routed the ignition wires and re mounted the tank a little better
replaced the cork on the oil tank lid
replaced the rubber on the fuel door
Took the bike out today and saw what it was like to overfill the oil tank. I filled the catchcan promptly. I did notice the primary did not fill though. So After this mess I ended up taking the battery out and cleaning out the battery box then cleaning the wiring up a bit in there too.
Now off for an official ride to test and I got pretty far today, I was able to put about 70 miles on the bike without the primary filling up.
I am going to head to work this week and try to get it to leak again. I am seeing a definite difference now that the catch can is installed. It has been a bunch of things done so I cannot attribut any one thing to the fix, I can however say that the bike is running pretty darned tight after all the mods and fixes including the sump breather. I will be keeping that breather since it does a much more efficient job at managing the crankcase pressure than that of the stock timed breather, it also eliminates the need to have the line running from the timed breather that I did not like looking at either.
Heres the Can O Beans catch can... I ordered a cool anodized one but this is the shade tree fix I rigged up. I also since have gotton ird of the bungee cord. That thing was horrible.
Here is a pic of the bike in front of "Rock Inn" in Lake Hughes. Great little place to stop in thats nested in the middle of tons of cool roads to ride around at.
Cool can o beans in the shot....
Turns out the owner of Rock Inn has a 73 commando too. I talked with him a bit then we rolled out and things went well. He has vintage night 1st weds of the month every month. I have been going here for years and never knew!
Cheers,
