Possibly my first screw up?

I believe that the intermediate shaft had broken off in my engine case.

The case came this way and I appears as if the end is broken in it. I looked at my parts manual and there doesn’t seem to be a sleeve around the shaft so I assumed that it must have broken off.

I heated it up and started to try and chisel it out when I stopped and said f#$k, I better ask someone who knows more than me.

I’ve been known to make things worse. I can see it now, here’s an engine case that’s been around for 47 years and I screw it up in a week.

Can someone please tell me if this is a sleeve or a broken shaft. And if it’s a sleeve and I screwed up, I’m going to be pretty mad at myself.

Take a look.

Now that I’m looking at the manual again, there appears to be a shaft bushing. I think I just hacked the bushing up pretty good.

Advice?

Damn...

Local machinist in Tacoma bushed this hole and fit new shaft. Maybe you can send it to him?

Yup, I did it, I hacked up the bushing, BUT I think the bushing has snapped off because it appears to be smaller than this one I found on eBay.

Warm the case and using a blind puller, pull the bushing and renew. Don't fret, it likely needed renewing anyway.

Slick

Think that is a camshaft bush. I would heat case with heat gun or on gas grill and should fall out. Then freeze new one and heat case to install. Could of been worse. Hide the hammer & chisel and forget where it is.

Yes, great advice. Thanks

Does anyone have any idea the size of this bearing?

I’m looking at Blind Pullers and I think the smallest size of the one I’m looking at is 10mm.

If you can get to both sides you don't need the blind puller.

I can get to both sides, but that’s where I chewed up the bushing with a hammer. How can I get it out without causing damage?

Although, I just bought a cheap puller off eBay, I’m sure I’ll find a good use for it.

Heat the case nice and hot. Find a socket correct size(bit smaller) for bush and tapbush out. Heat is the secret.

Determine what is the proper bush. Buy one from a reputable Norton parts dealer. Take all to a machine shop to fix. You don't
have the skill set to do this work.

Can someone confirm that that is in fact a bearing and that it can/should be removed and replaced?

I’m being extra cautious because I don’t want to damage it more.

Thanks

Appreciate the vote of confidence and you’re probably 100% correct t.

I want to learn and the best way to do that is to do it. I may have to buy a bearing press. I’ve needed one for a while and this may be the reason to get one.

I mean, how hard can it be to remove a bearing and replace it with a new one?

Buy yourself a Christmas/solstice/holiday-of-choice present and buy the Mick Hemmings DVDs on Heavyweight Twin Engine Restoration and Gearbox Servicing. You will have a much better idea after watching the expert. It's money well spent.

Almost every bearing and bushing on a Commando uses heat. Most drop out when the aluminum is heated to a high enough temperature. The oven works great despite all the stories people have about wives bitching. Just clean it up well before putting it in the oven. Buy a good heat gun. It's another life saver.
