Please explain the lingo

In our part of the world(nw uk) a Birmingham screwdriver is another name for a hammer, a few reasons why this might be but I don't know the definitive reason. A very interesting thread, how about a bit more non British slang. Some slang gets futher modified around here, for instance a 'cowboy' (builder, pumber,engineer etc) meaning someone who cuts corners resulting in a poorly finished job, is often refered to as a 'hickock' as in Wild Bill.
 
I lived in London for a few years in the late 80's early 90's and I found the slang fascinating.
The phrase 'toss pot" was common and it was explained to me it was from back in the day when you threw the contents of your chamber pot out into the street. I think it now its more to do with Mrs Palmer and her 5 daughters....... :roll:
