on frame # 121291 should the tank have a badge and a pin stripe or just badges? I think it should have the pin stripes but I could be wrong.....

If it's still the single seat frame then pin stripes and badges... See post #6 here:

ok thanks, I thought so. Is the stripe white or silver? also the steering head bearings are loose in the headstock, is this common?

Silver.
Re: Head bearings.... Can't comment but others here with broader knowledge hopefully will.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by steering head bearings are loose in the headstock. If you mean they are rattling around in there, no that would not be common. But...

If you can move the forks in any direction other than right or left smoothly, for example a fore or aft raking motion at the axle or triple clamps, then the bearings are too loose and the steering head should be adjusted. P11 uses individual ball bearings. Loads of fun to service and or replace.

post a pic of your tank please, whether it has paint or not.
size matters

as I was dis-mantling the bike I noted that I was able to push the bearings out of the headstock with my fingers!

Yep they are loose bearings in cups. Enjoy playing with the. I should probably replace mine, but I did it 48 years ago, so I'm probably still good. :)

I'm not talking about the balls but the races themselves, which on any other bike I've worked on are a tight fit in the headstock....

Got it. Not good IMO either. I don't know how common it is for the headstock to get beaten up enough to make the races loose. Mine was never used for off road or motocross, which would not do any part of a P11 much good. The people that have more experience restoring P11's would have a better answer.

121xxx range SN would definitely have the silver pinstripe and round plastic badges. The bearing cups just sit in the frame, they are not a press fit.

This one is also in the natural light, but a bit overcast, but notice the one above looks more orange, this one a lot more red...

I have made paper tracings of pinstripes from a Ranger 750 tank done by hand in gold, the early P11 was done by hand in silver to the same design. If you want the pinstripe to look authentic get it hand lined, I can send a paper tracing by post, just contact me. Roddy Allan
