Short stroke motor ran great, had a little trouble starting off the line with it in the first race, the new crank is very light and the bike wants to fall on its face off low revs. For the second race I revved it higher and slipped the clutch more and all was good. Once up to speed it is an excellent motor with a surprisingly good torque curve so you don''t have to wring it's neck to get good drive. Curiously, it is louder out the pipe than my old long stroke motor and the exhaust note sounds appropriately angry. I won two races Saturday and we got totally rained out on the Sunday.

Huge thanks to Ken of Fullauto Technologies for all his help, thanks also to JS Motorsport and of course the guru Herb Becker.

Well done Doug, any chance of some side view pics both sides, looking for ideas for mine !!
Regards Mike

Yes, still using the nourish 5 speed Triumph box, it was acting up a little at Mid-O and we took it apart after- I believe it was a clutch issue though, it looks like a plate was hanging up at the back of the clutch because all looked good in the box. We will see at Mosport in a few weeks how it does.

Hey Mike, I don't have many pics of the bike in the new red-orange paint- here is one racing and one of the bike in the old flat black.

Hanging a bit more than a cheek out there, Dougie.

What a dream. Special thanks to you too.

Doug - good footage, thanks for posting. I see you have a Go-Pro camera or similar mounted on the seat hump. Do you have bullet cams on the side and in the fairing nose? How do you address wind noise - with an external microphone mounted under the seat?

Hey NoiseyNorton, it was good to see you at the track, thanks for stopping by to say hello.

Daveh, it is all Gopros that I use. The wind noise is not too bad with the camera behind you as your body blocks much of the wind and I just use the audio from that camera for most of the footage. The audio you get from under the bubble at the front of the bike is crappy. The only really good audio with a proper mike is that at the beginning when I start the bike, that was with my DSLR with a mike. I would like to use an external mike and get some really good riding audio, I am getting there...

Ken, I am glad you enjoyed the footage, thanks for everything!

Made me feel nervous watching your video. The motor seems very revvy. However it sounds as though it has a fair bit longer stroke than my old 500cc Triumph engine. I found my bike with the standard Norton crank much easier to ride - no anxiety. You will need to be careful if or when you really start scratching. I find that with the heavy long stroke crank, the bike is very forgiving, yet still quick enough.

When I went to longer rods and lighter pistons I noticed the same change in exhaust note that you mention. Even though mine was still a long stroke -the exhaust sounded crisper and more staccato - what you call louder and more angry. I attribute this to the longer rod to stroke ratio offering a longer dwell time near TDC giving more time for more efficient combustion. Previous to the longer rods with stock type pistons it sounded softer and a bit fluffy.

I designed the logo and stickers for Ken and had them printed out as well, I am not sure if he has any left, I am out until we do another run of them.
Maybe if you are really nice to Ken... Or perhaps each head comes with a sticker.

How much does that crank weigh?

Been running the head on my short stroke race bike all season....it didn't come with stickers, and at the moment there is only one sticker on it, Rickman Metisse on the seat.

I am certainly interested if you or Ken get another batch done.

congratulations on the victories? what all are the details?? what type bikes are you up against?

I believe that billet crank was 20.4 lbs, here is a photo- however, I believe that this is the crank he made for the 890 but mine is very similar. I will have to ask Herb if there was a weight difference.
Bikes I have raced at against at Mid-Ohio are CB750's, XS750's, CB550's, RD400,s Triumphs etc. The turnout this year wasn't that impressive as in some past years.

The real dogfight is this coming weekend at the VRRA Vintage Festival at Mosport (now called 'Canadian Tire Motorsports Park), I think it is harder to win that race than anywhere in North America. The big competition there will be CR750 Hondas, H2R 750 Kawasaki, race framed XS750 Yamahas, a Rickman Triumph triple etc. I won the race last year but repeating is going to be a tall order. There is even a very fast 'Yamando', a bored out XS750 Yamaha motor in a Commando frame.

We are going to do another run of the decals soon so you can bug Ken for them. I am planning on racing at Barber in Alabama in October, I would be happy to give a decal to anyone that asks at the track.

The crank on the baby scale-
