Norton Villiers Commando 1968 Re commissioning an adventures at 30

Was actually thinking that baz to be honest would make sense, its pretty bang on excluding the frame mod which was done back in the day anyway so might leave it where it is :)

Need to decide on cam chain tensioners to.

Ignition coil bracket(s)?

I meant with removing the gusset plate the 68 has and adding the frame support spar from the 69 year but they did do it back in the day can't put into words how happy I am with the work Norman has done absolutely bang on.

So still pretty original in my personal opinion as it was a warranty recall back in the day. Happy everyone advised me to do it.

I'm very content that I did the modification as I'm gonna use her alot like the 650ss hopefully for a trip over to Norway when all these restrictions are over. So couldn't risk leaving leaving her with the old gusset plate.

Really wanna get the correct headlight when I can as well noticed mine was an emgo on disassembly.

Can look into a better headsteady as well when she's back together

Going back to looms slightly. Does anyone know the difference between the 68 n 69 loom ? Is it to do with the relocation of the coils or more changes.

The '68 harness is for the 20M3 (so '68 to mid '69) Fastback (and 'R' type) with points housing behind the cylinders and condensers attached to the air filter plate, therefore, different from the camshaft points '69 20M3S model harness.

The '69 20M3S harness also had wires for the (US) front brake light (brake cable) switch and it seems direction indicator wires have been included (Classic Lucas) that probably wouldn't have been there originally.

My comment regarding the ignition coils was that as the frame now has the brace tube then the coils (or at least the upper coil) can't be refitted in its original location.

Thanks Lab that's a big help :) I'll get the right one ordered in the morning. yep that was the only trade off being the location of the coils but better than risking the frame snapping especially for the Norway trip :)

Least it's a bit of futureproofing for the frame now .

Just gotta wait for some stuff to show up now then I can get stuck in on her.

Some progress today :) got the crankshaft back together using some tips I learnt from Norman White's new book.

Tomorrows job will be to start assembling the crank cases crank and camshaft, should be fairly smooth sailing hopefully as I did label everything up when I took it all apart hopefully haha!

Getting very excited now to be making progress on her.

Current progress :) just waiting on a few bits turning up from Andover to finish the bottom end so tomorrow I'm gonna switch gears an do some work on the valves n clean the cylinder head.

Todays progress :)

Cases are together crank is in cams in woop!!

Tomorrow hoping to paint the frame if its dry so that can dry ready for final chassis assembly next weekend.

The plan for this week is to complete the engine excluding the oil pump as it needs a new one. The engine will be all back into the chassis next weekend though!

What a crazy day trying to paint a Commando frame in between rain haha! Had to re do it all at one point lol.

Managed it in the end just one tiny area to touch up where it started raining on luckily thats covered by the tank I can sort that in the summer though when the conditions are better! Came put pretty darn good though for rattle cans an 4 degrees lol :D

Was finally warmer today. Bit more progress gapped the rings lockwired the followers all set to install the pistons an cylinder tomorrow then I can crack on with the work on cleaning the cylinder head up an re fitting the valves :) hoping to have the rolling chassis done with the engine in her mid week if I get a dry day where I can build the chassis in the garden.

Thanks mate the new loom came to from Andover so got that to fit on the rebuild of the chassis :) Hopefully the cylinder head wont take to much work as I'm pretty sure I spent a fair bit of time on it last year just need to clean the valves up an then check the seating on them. Impressed with the pistons and rings they look real quality all measured up good to. Dependant on how well the cylinder n pistons fitting goes in the morning if it's warm enough might be able to do a bit on the Cylinder head even tomorrow. It's gonna have to be really gone through the head though as that's where most of the glass media was from the previous owner.

Gonna have to look at something to clean the oil tank out with as well as a precaution, pretty sure I'm going to replace the oil pump and oil spin on filter assembly and all the oil lines as a matter of course.

Made some progress and hit a problem today got the Pistons fitted and ready to rock! :)

Just wondering if I can pick the collective knowledge of everyone

Problem is when checking through the Base nuts for the cylinder found some incorrect washers by looks of it in thickness and diameter also does T.2016 The Front Nut have a washer?
From what I can see I need
Washer wise

Cylinder
06.7872 (NM24252) x6 (or 7? if T.2016 has one)
00.0011 cylinder head stud washer x 2

For the Head
016213 cylinder head bolt washer x 5
00.0011 cylinder head stud washer x 2

Are there any benefits to the different type of Cylinder head sleeve nut

Thanks in advance.
