Indeed.
But this is not just ‘any’ country getting a little ahead.
Its an aggressive regime looking to get ahead of everyone.
Then what ??
Yes, and still we support them financially, not just buying PCs et al but the infrastructure, nuclear power stations etc etc...
How did we become so impotent?? (Answers on a postcard to: 10 Downing Street :) )
It'll only change from within, as it did elsewhere, but was it/is it for the better??
We don't ride bicycles to work any more because we can afford cars from China. What happens when the Chinese worker decides it's his right to afford a car?

At work we have a firm come on a regular basis to weld test our welds
They used to travel out to China to test out there
They had some interaction with the workers
The workers lived next to the complex so not much traveling
They told me that the workers were generally happy and content

I'll bet they'd be gobsmacked (not a word I'd usually use!) to hear that we car owning, house owning, TV watching, beer drinking, foreign holiday taking, decadent spoilt bastards are all being given £400 by our government, even if we work (and more if we don't)!!
Even I have trouble getting my head round that one!

I hunt for ‘not made in China’ wherever I can, for all of the reasons discussed. Renovated our house this year and was looking for one of those kitchen bench top electrical towers; press the top and it rises out of the bench.

Found a firm in Brisbane lorded for their quality product, no mention of overseas manufacture. Box arrived and on the side ‘designed in Brisbane’ but inside, clear reference to ‘made in China’! Completely unavoidable methinks.

It's how 'big brands' stay big. Quick check in the bathroom shows Colgate toothpaste (Chrome cleaner?) from Poland, Johnsons talcum powder (tyre changes :) ) from Thailand!
Though neither have 'pretend' Union Jacks on...

PS: How did we get from Norton Atlas to talcum powder?? Is there a 'derail' award???

I suppose the answer is in the name :(

You guys are making me depressed ! I just rode a 2022 Harley Nightster 975 , not bad at all . Its 79 RWHP , 481 lbs wet and handles great . Its also smooth at 70 mph while cruising . Based on those numbers its faster (quicker) than my XR1200 and Norton 961 !

Are you surprised the Nightster is smoother and faster?
Plus you can buy service parts.
Get it serviced anywhere in the country.
From a company that actually shares info, updates and news daily / weekly and monthly.

Totally opposite of TVS.
@Voodooo as if you actually want plastic you can just buy anywhere.

Why the surprise?
I wasn' expecting the revs to pick up that quickly or rev that high I guess. It also cruises like a bigger bike at 70-75 mph and feels relaxed. I like the feeling going down the road where as on my Kaw Z900rs I don't like the feel so much . Don't get me wrong the thing rips with pipe/tune , and power wheelie easily . Probably too fast for me now.

Not yet , still looking
I can get a 2019 Triumph Speed twin for 9.4K or a 2015 BMW R9T for 8.99K . I would probably choose the BMW for the shaft . People aren't buying bikes right now and prices are good.

I had an R9T and I liked it. For a modern bike that ole boxer engine has a bit of character. Nothing compared to a 961 or Harley, but a lot more than most of todays ‘appliances’.

So, there’s a full page article in this weeks MCN where Norton explain that the reason they dropped the Atlas range was because ‘it’s not the future’ meaning the future is electric and not ICE.

Then in the SAME article he goes on to explain that EV and ICE are not mutually exclusive, and they can and will coexist at Norton, and their future line ups will include both new ICEs and EV platforms.

So WHICH IS IT ?? Is ICE not the future … or is it part of the future … you can’t argue it both ways !

They can’t even get their own story straight FFS… and we question why people are getting ‘negative‘ !

I would very much like to know the real reason, as, like many, I believe the Atlas would have been a huge seller, so really can’t work out what they’re thinking. And their attempted explanation creates further confusion instead of clarity.

Find myself agreeing with you again FE, especially about the Atlas, but clearly there has to be a transition. It won’t be ICE one day and EV the next. They will be developed, manufactured and marketed concurrently for years to come no doubt; until ICE is slowly phased out.

In one of the 961 launch videos the journalist mentions that Norton intend to release three new models over the next 2-3 years (I think), with one of them being an EV. Don’t think that being ambiguous. Norton are building ICE bikes whilst developing EV - don’t think that’s arguing anything both ways. I suspect all motorcycles manufacturers are doing exactly the same.

The arguing both ways comment is aimed at the fact that they used ‘ICE is not the future’ as a reason for canning the Atlas… whilst at the same time saying that they intended to introduce new ICEs…

If you can explain how that is a logical, coherent argument, please enlighten me …

I get your point mate, although I can’t remember reading the ‘ICE not the future’ quote from Norton (probably missed it), although as we all know that is inevitable.

I think the Atlas was the victim of a couple of scenarios. They obviously need to strike out in their own direction at some stage - spending time and money releasing another Donnington Norton would‘nt do that. I also thought the ‘bling for dollar’ advertised for the Atlas looked pretty bloody awesome. Maybe in todays environment they simply couldn’t market the Atlas in the intended price bracket. Lets see what they have to say at the NEC - would love to be there.

Norton were not going to say either of the above so maybe ‘ICE is not the future’ met the narrative at the time.
