Black cases do look nice, but unless they have been powder coated its pretty difficult to get paint to stay on them, and also quite hard to find a paint thats resistant to petrol.

High-temp motor paint seems to work just fine. Dad's bike has been painted just like this for years and has held up very well. Powdercoating would be neat if one had the stuff all apart already.

The guy that powder coated my frame and parts wanted to do the cases in 'chrome', the barrels in whatever I wanted, probably blue, I never showed him the head.

It's harder to get the springs on the brake shoes AFTER they're installed!

Bike is looking mighty nice.

Dad must have done that after my picture but before installing the assembly. The brakes work great. :)

I like your blacked out approach, I own an 03' Hinckley Bonnie that has the chrome covers and it just does not look right so I am looking for a set of the black covers from a Bonnie Black. Your bike is really going to look neat.

Your bike looks super-tough with the black engine. Nice! Chrome pipes or will those be black too?

Chrome seamless mufflers and stainless pipes from CommandoSpecialties. :)

I'm going to sandblast my original exhaust and paint it flat (or semigloss) black, but only because I'm curious to see how it looks.

Found another $15 or so in parts I need before we can do much more, so I'm ordering those. Hopefully we'll get more done this weekend. :)

ksu,
the phrase "after much fighting with tires" is setting off alarm bells over here. changing those tires is easy if you know how and there should be no force required. if you're having trouble, there's a pretty good chance that you could put a pin hole in the inner tube or pinch it or have the sharp end of a spoke rubbing on the inner tube and have a sudden catastrophic deflation of the tire. please be safe- john b.

Oh, we did fine, it just took a while. I think dad drew it out intentionally longer than it needed to in order to teach me what the hell I was doing. Me being involved and doing as much as I could also slowed the whole thing down. We got it taken care of with no real problems, though. :)

Looking good in black, I'm temted to do the same for the head and barrel and the tranny casing.

Does anyone know if you could anodize the engine parts instead of painting? Seems like that would be pretty durable (?).

Not with esthetically pleasant results. Anodizing cast alloys is a major PITA.

Also ordered a pair of NJB half-shrouded shocks from Clubman yesterday. It's getting there. I think dad's going to do a bit more work tonight, but that's where I stopped a bit ago. I also realized that I may be a bit overwhelmed on the '70 Roadster (considering it needs torn COMPLETELY down and the motor has to be put back together from parts).. I'm thinking I may try to unload it on Craigslist for a profit, if I can. I won't take a loss (I'd rather just keep it), but if I can get out of it with extra money in-hand, maybe that's a better plan.. :/
