at this rate fast Eddie will have his new engine build and I will still be fanning about with a dip switch.

Ha, I wish!

Fear not aulblue, you'll have time to grow a new dip switch from seed before my engine is done !!

Wiring harness number 54955256/57095 new Lucas, headlight toggle switch....lu31788 5pole,

OK well, if you haven't already done so (or re-check if you have) the headlight toggle switch terminal (T) connections are:
T1 - not normally used, but ensure the spade can't short.
T4 - brown/white (lighting power feed from the battery) Edit: Or, White/brown according to the Lucas 54955256 wiring diagram (later bikes it was white/brown).
T6 - red/black (pilot, if fitted). Pilot then goes off when the headlamp is switched on, as shown on the wiring diag. For the pilot to remain on with H/lamp, connect red/black to T1 instead of T6).
T7 - brown/green (tail, instruments).
T8 - dip switch, blue.

Lucas type switch 31563 clamp on wire colours , blue/white, blue, red/black, brown. The headlight is H4. Ammeter in headlight shell .
Should be:
Blue - Power feed from the toggle switch.
Blue/white - To headlamp main beam (also to main beam warning bulb in shell).
Blue/red - Dip beam.
Brown (assume it's) - Horn, connect to harness Edit: brown/black (the button is an earth so the circuit is battery-horn-switch-earth).

auldblue said:
When the switch is on dip no power to bulb, when on main power to both main and dip beam.

Both filaments on together suggests the wire connections to the bulb may be wrong (a feed and common swapped over).

Your earlier photo, below, appears to show the headlamp earth/return (red) connected to brown Edit (brake light circuit unless it's the dip switch brown)? :?
Also, the low beam wire (yellow) appears connected to harness red? :? And blue to blue which again is wrong for standard harness wiring.

The left-hand H4 plug connection looking from the rear (red wire on your plug) is the common/earth, so connects to harness red, the yellow plug wire should therefore, connect to dip switch blue/red (dip) and the blue to the dip switch blue/white (main/high beam).

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

I've added a couple of edits to my previous post as the harness horn wire is brown/black, not brown which is the brake light wiring, and the headlamp toggle switch feed is shown as white/brown on the Lucas harness diagram, but on the original wiring diagram it's brown/white.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Cheers for that Les. Very clear indeed ,thanks. I appreciate it.

I've only had minimal time today but still have no light on the dip switch and the rear light comes on when I put the fuse in. Will give it a good shot tomorrow.

BTW, have sent you a PM.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Finally got the electrics to work properly, for about five minutes. Stuck a new AGM battery in and tightened the screws on the switch and it worked but the switch action was still not crisp, the 68 bikes switch although old is quite precise the new switch is not. So ordered a dip and new toggle switch from LPW and that should be that.
That is the third switch to bigger up , the trident dip is gone ,the 69 mando conked out last weekend with a faulty ignition switch ,if only intermittently .

Pulled the spark plugs and had a look at the bores , wow , jings crivens , help ma boab. Time for a stiff drink!

When I was wiring up my Commando (none standard set up) I ended up buying 4 different switches and throwing 3 away. Lesson learnt, next time I'll by the bestest switch first, irrespective of price!

Do tell, what did you see through the hole...?

Photobucket down again. What did I see! Well a didn't see a cross hatch more like circular parallel scores round each cylinder and oil in the valve pockets and some vertical scores as well . The bike did run with a wee bit of reek but then , when I tried to start it the kick start spring broke, so when it fired up again the throttle stuck open. It was all kind of Monty Python and coupled with the fact I got lost getting there and I was only going up for a look see ,after going to the polishers ,who wasn't in. The Big Man up the stairs was telling me something and I did not listen to him. Kinda like my first Commando spent 2k at a restoration firm and it ran out of fuel before I got to a filling station . The after I filled it up there was fuel pissing out the fuel tank on to the engine. That was fun ,great first ride on a commando.

I love motorbikes ,more than beer ,ciggs and women! Decisions, decisions .

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Sounds like you gotta pull it down all the way and do it right to me Jimmy old boy.

Will be expensive though ...

P'raps sell the '68 to raise funds

No. You can have it if I pop my clogs before you're 50, so you can jot my name down on the "dead pool".

Saw the painter today said he will paint the tank and mudguards for the cost of the paint, he owes me one. But I will have to get someone else to do the pin stripes,I know John Coates does it but I think he might have died.

I don't really know what tyres these bikes run best on ,could do with some input, Matt?

As for the engine, I'll get it MOT first and then decide 750 ?

Got some stuff from L.P Williams today , but it was my birthday and I was refereing my two daughters fighting the both want the T160 when I snuff it , they don't give two hoots about the nortons . Photobucket still out.

I don't want one quite that badly as to want to benefit from that offer Jimmy old chap!

Re tyres, the serious riders that I know with pre OIF Triumphs swear by Avon Roadriders. A fast chap I knew even raced on them on his '69 Bonnie in BHR series.

If anyone thinks that looks good tell me!!!

Cheers Nigel, I have road runners on the Nortons , I fancy a wee change maybe something meaty ,Beaty ,big and bouncy. As for getting the bike ,there is a catch.....you've got to take me to the graveyard on the pillion. Mind you you won't need a helmet for me.

Re: Last train to Glasgow Central..........Last Traaaain....

Tyres !?

K70 Dunlop , 3.25 - 19 & 4.00 - 18 for drifting the dirt roads, 3.50 - 19 front if its boggy .

Ditto K 81s , but 4.25 /460 rear , 3.50/ 410 Fr dulls the steering , but twice the grip of a 3.25 . For wearing the footrests off , on TARMAC .

The bigger sizes are better for touring ( weight/ luggage ) and Wear , the smaller drift better solo . :D Lower than the 4.25 TT100 will Drag way to much.

But Im prehistoric and one or two other things mayve turned up , the PZ2 michlens were ' the latest thing out ' & the Phantom Perrillis , with the HARDER Center
( for Wear ) think the later american TT100-R were thus . With the RRR underlined ! .

Not To Narrow on the Rear , so it dosnt drag . Not to stickey , or it can get a weave on Sulby straight . ! :P

The Rear Settup 68 on is stiffer & better tha earlier so not so much drama .

EXPENSIVE ! bleedy tyres , chains, sprockets etc . SURE . But other than complete dogs , you normally find much internally SERVICEABLE . for us skinflints .

The Primary Spocket/ clutch chainwheel ALIGNMENT is ALWAYS CHECKED . Just run a stell ruler along the engine sprocket , and emply a spacer & measuring stick , a thing in the gap ( feeler Guage ) etc to see theyre alingned , as they were, then . Before the commies took over the Factory .

Cheers for that Matt and noted.

But..... I've been having flashbacks to when I was a boy and my grass tracker project that I sold unfinished only got it running but 75 sheets was big money when I was keen on the lassie that worked in the post office plus the fact I could use the Morris Ital .

Can't remember much about that old bike other than we had a good time with the 75.

Anyway I was going to try and convert the Bonnie to a farm bike for the fields this winter, so I have been looking at road legal chunkies. I haven't had a scrambler since the nineties and my cr 250. I have not been at the bike for a few days, trying to finish the workshop, but an hour or two will put the seat and tank on etc for the MOT.
